Cloverdale’s Jalen Moore and Greencastle’s Colin York hooked up in December for one of the highest-scoring duels in Indiana basketball history, combining for 93 points between them.

Moore went on to lead his team to its fourth straight sectional title, while York got his team to the sectional finals.

As a result of their outstanding seasons, the high-scoring senior guards have been named as co-winners of the Putnam County “Player of the Year” award.

North Putnam’s Elliot Gross, South Putnam’s Allen Plunkett and Greencastle’s Gavin Bollman were also named to the all-county first team.

Moore compiled one of the best seasons in state history this winter in leading his team to a 21-7 record before being eliminated by Indianapolis Scecina in the regional finals, and earned his third straight all-county honor.

His list of accomplishments includes:

• State’s leading scorer at 36.8 points per game

• Tied school record for single-game scoring with 53 points against Greencastle

• Set state records with 321 made free throws and 374 attempted free throws

• Total of 1,031 points is third-highest in a single season in state history

• Finished in 11th place overall in Indiana career scoring with 2,440 points (also second best in school and Putnam County history)

• Named to Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Small School All-State first team and all-Western Indiana Conference team

• Led team to third straight Putnam County title and fourth straight sectional title

• Helped team to 83-28 record in his four-year career

For the season, Moore also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 47 per cent from the field (30 percent from 3-point range) and 86 percent from the free throw line.

Moore will play in the Indiana North-South All-Star Classic at Martinsville on April 7.

York is also on the all-county team for the third straight year, having earned second-team honors as a sophomore and first-team honors last season.

He shot 44 percent from the field this year, including 39 percent from 3-point range, and also shot 85 percent from the free throw line. York averaged 2.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

His list of accomplishments includes:

• Finished third in Greencastle in career scoring with 1,419 points

• Finished as Greencastle career leader in 3-point field goals with 220

• Earned honorable mention honors on IBCA Small School All-State team and all-Western Indiana Conference honors

• Helped team more than double its win total from the previous season (from eight to 17)

York will play in the 6th Annual Spring Classic all-star game at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill., on April 6.

Both Moore and York will play collegiately next winter, but neither has made a final decision.

While each of the five first-team all-county performers had previously earned all-county honors, the five members of the second team achieved that status for the first time in their careers – Greencastle’s Brody Whitaker, South Putnam’s Dalton Scott, Cloverdale’s Jake Wilkes and North Putnam’s Andrew Pickel and Caleb Duncan.

Here is a look at the rest of the first team and the members of the second team:

  • This is really dumb. There's no way that this should be a co-player of the year award. It's not even close that Moore thoroughly dominated in almost every game that he played. It sounds like this is just based on one head-to-head matchup. Everyone gets a participation award.

  • Not even close no way it should have been a tie. Absolutely ridiculous Jalen Moore was on a different level than any other player in the county. The paper screwed his brother out of the same award when he was a senior so I guess jalen should be happy he got a piece of it this year

  • This is sad Jalen was a level above the rest. Not saying Colin wasn’t a very good player, but do a blind comparison of those accomplishments, and well there you go.I also hope Jalen doesn’t get screwed out of being a Indiana All Star due to media not thinking he isn’t even the best in his county. Disappointed with this choice by the sports department.

  • Jalen scored over a 1,000 points just this year, over 2,000 during his career at Cloverdale. No way, should he be sharing player of the year.
