BRAZIL — Led by senior Jake Bennett’s second-place overall finish, Greencastle won the Northview Invitational on Saturday over 12 other teams with a score of 322.

Cloverdale finished seventh with a 377.

Tiger Cub coach Steve Paquin was happy with the results on a difficult day for golf.

“On a cold, windy day on a very wet golf course the Tiger Cubs opened their season with a very good first-place finish over some of the area’s best golf teams,” Paquin said. “It was a very difficult day to play golf with windy conditions and cold temperatures affecting all golfers.”

Bennett shot a 73, falling one stroke behind medalist Jackson Franceville of Cascade.

“Jake played extremely well in the conditions, hitting good shots and putting well on soft bumpy greens,” Paquin said. “Jaxon [Parmley], Conner [Taylor], Blaise [Hasty] and Benton [Parmley] hit a lot of good shots during the round, but each had some doubles, triples, and quads.

“The high scores on holes will have to be eliminated in order for this team to reach its potential,” he added. “We handled the weather and course conditions very well as a whole and this was a very good opening for the season.”

Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun thought his team performed well considering the poor weather this spring.

“I was pleased with many things we did,” he said. “The course was much drier than expected, so the drainage work done there last summer certainly improved course conditions. It was pretty cold, and at times the wind was pretty uncomfortable. Some very good golf was played in spite of those things.”

Drew Boyette paced the Clovers with an 83.

“Drew had some putting difficulties, but otherwise played a pretty good round,” Wokoun said. “I think he had a very good first outing, as there are some easy fixes he can make to drop his score. Since we have been pretty limited in practice opportunities this spring, he had a very encouraging start. He could very easily have shot 75 or 76, and I am confident that he will reach that level pretty soon.”

Wokoun also thought that Jason Miller and Tyler Harrison had “pretty good” stretches of golf that were punctuated by some tough holes.

“They demonstrated some things that they can build on, and elimination of some course management issues will help bring their scores down,” Wokoun said. “Consistency within the round will be pivotal to their success.”

Wokoun added that Michael Holsapple was playing his first high school event, and Wyatt Helterbrand did some “very good” things but had some inconsistency.

“It has been a pretty difficult preparation this spring, but Michael did some very good things in his round,” Wokoun said. “He will improve quickly as he gains experience, and the weather gets better. He had a couple of stretches of very good play.

“Wyatt played about 13 holes very well, but the other five were filled with frustration,” Wokoun added. “His game has improved significantly, but we just need to string together a week of consistent practice and play to see the results.”

Greencastle sweeps Eels — The Tiger Cubs picked up a doubleheader victory over Eminence on Saturday, winning the first game 4-2 and the second game 25-0.

Tiger Cub coach Ben Wells thought his team had a “big win” in the first game, anchored by a strong pitching performance from Tanner Sanders.

“He pitched a great game for us and allowed us to stay in the game, even though we did not make a lot of good contact,” Wells said of Sanders, who went six innings, struck out 10 and only allowed two hits. “Unfortunately for Tanner, we struggled at the plate. We did a pretty bad job of producing runs, leaving 10 runners on during the game and only producing six hits. We did not do a very good job with our plate discipline and were out on our front foot a lot causing a lot of lazy fly balls.”

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Ethan Maier provided the winning hit for the Cubs with a two-out, two-run double.

“Nick Sutherlin then came in and pitched a great seventh inning for us and picked up the win,” Wells said. “It was a great learning experience for our guys, and it shows that they are able to persevere and find a way to win when not playing their best.

In the second game, Brandon Glaze and Abe Wade combined to throw a no-hitter, striking out seven hitters between them.

“This was the first time all year that both our hitting and pitching really clicked for us,” he said. “They worked ahead in the count and did a good job of letting their defense help them.

After getting only six hits in the opener, the Tiger Cubs pounded out 21 in the second game.

“Everyone through the lineup hit the ball hard,” Wells said. “I am hoping that this will really get us started on a streak and carry us forward into this big week.”

Brody Whitaker had four hits and five RBI to lead the Cubs at the plate, while Wade and Gus Manion each had three hits.

Glaze, Sutherlin and Alex Costin each added two hits, while Wade had four RBI and Jacob Harris and Manion each drove in three runs.
