PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles strike early, often in 8-1 win over North

South Putnam pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning for all the runs it would need on Tuesday evening in an 8-1 win over North Putnam in high school baseball action.

Tanner Pistelli walked with one out in the bottom of the first and went to third on a double by Brandon Demoret. Cleanup hitter Jackson Wood did his job by ripping a single to right field to plate both runners.

The Eagles picked up two more runs in the fourth inning as Hayden Switzer was hit by a pitch with two outs and went to third on a single by Devin Cashion.

Both runners advanced on a balk, with Switzer scoring, and Cashion eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles kept the pressure on in the fourth inning with three more runs. Dylan Crum singled with one out and went to second as Aiden LeBlanc walked. Pistelli singled to load the bases, and all three runners advanced on a sacrifice fly with Crum scoring.

Both LeBlanc and Pistelli eventually scored on wild pitches.

The Eagles got their final run in the sixth as Cashion singled, went to second on a bank and scored as Dru Teipen doubled.

North Putnam got its only run in the second inning as Cole Shoemaker singled, went to second on a balk and came home on a single by Kaine Benge.

Wood and Cashion each had two hits for the Eagles, while Wood had two RBI and Demoret and Teipen each had one. Pistelli scored two runs.

North Putnam managed just four hits off Crum and Demoret, who combined to strike out nine batters and walk just four.

No Cougars had more than one hit.

South Putnam improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Western Indiana Conference with the win.

North Putnam fell to 0-2 and 0-1.

The teams will play again today at North Putnam.

In other baseball:

West Vigo 13, Greencastle 2 — The visiting Vikings got six runs in the top of the second inning and went on to record a WIC victory on Tuesday.

Jacob Harris and Abe Wade had singles for the only Greencastle hits.

The Tiger Cubs got their runs in the fourth inning as Nick Sutherlin walked, stole second, went to third on a single by Harris and scored on a single by Wade. Harris eventually scored on an error.

Greencastle fell to 3-2 (0-1), while West Vigo improved to 4-0-1.

The teams meet again today in West Terre Haute.

Softball

West Vigo 7, Greencastle 4 — Greencastle led 3-0 after four innings and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but allowed four runs in the top of the seventh to fall to the Vikings on Tuesday.

Greencastle got three runs in the fourth as Ivy Wright doubled, went to third as Anna Chavez reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a groundout. Chavez stole second, went to third on the groundout and scored on a single by Layna Robinson.

The final run of the rally came as Delaney Wright reached on an error, went to second on a groundout, went to third on Robinson’s hit and scored on a passed ball.

Greencastle got its tiebreaking run in the sixth as Robinson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double by Mckenzie Woodall.

West Vigo got two doubles and three singles to start off the seventh inning in putting its game-winning rally together.

Robinson and Woodall each had three hits for the Cubs, with Robinson and Ivy Wright also hitting doubles.

Greencastle fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the WIC.

Tennis

Terre Haute North 5, Greencastle 0 — At Terre Haute, the Patriots swept all five matches in straight sets to pick up the victory on Monday.
