Eagles split pair — South Putnam lost 5-0 at Sullivan on Saturday and bounced back on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over Turkey Run.

“Against Sullivan, the girls struggled and everyone agreed things just didn’t feel right,” SP coach Johnny Briones said. “Maybe the cold temperatures had something to do with it. We still had some close matches, and I’m proud of our girls for never giving up.”

Against Turkey Run, Briones thought his singles players started slowly but were able to recover.

“Once they picked up their game, they disposed of their opponents,” he said. “No. 1 doubles is struggling a bit, but showing signs of improvement. No. 2 doubles is playing really well.

“Both doubles teams working on court coverage, and improving on that.”

The Eagles travel to West Vigo on Saturday for the Viking Invite, with the host school, Turkey Run and Linton, weather permitting.

Softball

North Putnam 13, Rockville 11 — At Rockville, the Cougars bounced back from a big loss to South Putnam earlier in the week to pick up the victory.

“We took the lead in the first inning, but ended up trailing most of the game,” NP coach Jarrod Duff said. “We had a lot of girls step up and make plays tonight. One of our struggles so far has been letting a mistake turn into another mistake. Playing the next play is something that we constantly talk to them about. That’s been a struggle for us. We had one bad inning in the field where I think we let things snowball.”

Rockville came up with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead, and added two more in the fourth before the Cougars came through with four in the top of the fifth to pull within 8-7.

The Cougars were three outs from defeat, but got five runs in the top of the seventh and hung on for the win.

“Being down and being able to come back is a positive thing for us,” Duff said. “We have struggled at the plate in our last two games. I told the girls that I truly believed that we were going to come out of that because we have players who can hit the ball. Hopefully, we gained some confidence tonight.”

Jada Stump had four hits and two RBI for the Cougars, while Chloe LaPierre added three hits and two RBI. LaPierre, Emma Haste and Olivia Haste each homered.

Brown County 5, Cloverdale 1 — At Nashville, the Eagles got four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 game.

Tori Combs had a double and the only RBI for the Clovers, while Hannah Long, Macie Couch, Makenzie Allen and Sky Lowe each had a single.

“This was another very well played softball game on back- to-back nights for the Clovers against some of the best pitching on our schedule,” Clover coach Jim Spencer said. “Brown County is a very strong team. We made the plays on defense and made some solid contact at the plate. We just came out on the losing end of a good, all-around effort by the Clovers.”

Brown County 000 140 x — 5 7 0

Cloverdale 12, Bloomfield 10 — Cloverdale led 7-2 after two innings and held on for the win.

Makenzie Allen had a single, double and an RBI for the Clovers, while Dinah Bunch had two singles, Morgan Goss had two singles and an RBI, Tori Combs had a home run and two RBI and Sky Lowe had a double and an RBI.

“Both teams struggled in the field tonight, but we were able to win the game we were playing at the time,” Clover coach Jim Spencer said. “It still comes down to making a play late in the field or at the plate to get the win. We did some really nice things on the night and were able to make plays late to survive.

“We still have a long way to go in certain areas and we will just continue to practice and get better.”

Brown County 7, Cloverdale 4 — The Clovers outhit the Eagles 9-7, but had four costly errors that hurt them.

“Jarron Rossok and Nick Winders had another great pitching effort, but we had a few errors early in the game and we couldn’t overcome them,” Clover coach Kent Bass said. “Jarron gave up seven runs, but only one was earned. Winders came in with the bases loaded and one out, and got a strikeout and fly out to get out of the fifth. He pitched a scoreless sixth.

Leading hitters were Haiden Harbert with two doubles , T.J. Hagymasi with two singles Nick winders with two hits and Rossok, Parker Watts and Tyce Jackson with one hit each.

“We need to get as many fly balls and ground balls as we can in practice to get ready for the county tourney,” Bass said.

Monrovia 9, Cloverdale 2 — Errors again cost the Clovers on Monday, as most of the Bulldog runs were unearned.

Haiden Harbert and Parker Watts each had a hit, while Nick Winders walked all four times and T.J. Hagymasi had an RBI fielder’s choice.

Track and field

Cougars finish third — North Putnam lost to both Monrovia and Southmont, but coach Kevin Lutes was glad just for his athletes to get to compete.

“It was great to finally get an actual meet out of the way to see what we need to work on,” he said. “With our numbers down from last year, and a few athletes still ineligible, it’s clear there are some gaps that we need to find a way to fill.”

Lutes thought his athletes did as well as they could, and with hard work will show improvement throughout the season.

“Overall though, I was impressed with the determination of our ladies,”

he said. “I believe they fought just about as hard as they could in almost every event. We just need to look at every day as an opportunity to get better, and work to make that happen.”

The Cougars got firsts from Emily Gasho in the discus and Emily O’Neal in the 100 and the high jump.

Golf

Greencastle 155, West Vigo 223 — Very balanced scoring led the Cubs over the Vikings.

Blaise Hasty and Conner Taylor each had 38s, Jake Bennett had a 39, Kyle Tesmer had a 40, Jaxon Parmley had a 41, Benton Parmley had a 45 and Josh Bumgardner 49.

“All seven scores were better than all but one Viking,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “The veteran Tiger Cubs played consistently on a warm but breezy evening on hard fast greens. We improved on Saturday’s tournament scores by eliminating the double and triple bogeys.”

Several Cubs improved upon their recent play.

“Blaise, Conner, Jake, Kyle and Jaxon all put together good rounds by keeping the ball in play and putting very well on the fast greens at Rea Park,” Paquin said. “Benton played well as this was his first time playing the course and Josh continues to improve and lower his scores. “

Clovers win triangular — Cloverdale shot a 191 on Thursday to defeat Linton-Stockton (208) and West Vigo (213).

Cloverdale was led by Drew Boyette with a 42, while Wyatt Helterbrand shot a 47, Jason Miller shot a 50, Michael Holsapple shot a 52, Cody Morris shot a 59 and Tyler Harrison added a 61.

“We are really struggling with consistency,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “Sometimes it is hole-to-hole, sometimes it is shot-to-shot. Everyone of our players had some good shots and some good holes. However, every one of our players also allowed things to get the best of them as well. I think everyone has a list of things that they could have done much better, and have done much better in the past.”

Individually, the Clover players all had their ups and downs.

“Drew did some really good things, but had just enough go wrong to prevent a really good score,” Wokoun noted. “Wyatt had a very rough start, but regained himself and finished very strong. Jason played six pretty good holes and was competitive, but his other three were almost ‘other worldly.’

“Michael and Cody were playing in their first dual match situation,” he added. “They are still learning the ropes, but they have demonstrated that good things are in the works. We just need them to find the consistency that makes an OK effort into something more.”

Cloverdale (2-0) plays in the Danville Invitational Saturday at Twin Bridges.

North Putnam 248, Monrovia 255 — The Cougars started their season with a win over the Bulldogs.

Both coaches [Monrovia’s Don Pearson and North Putnam’s Earl Hall] were just happy to be able to see their teams play.

“With the very limited range time their teams achieved this spring because of weather, the results were not all that bad,” Hall said. “Both teams are young and lean in experience but long on enthusiasm.”

Hunter Rudes led the Cougars with a 54, while R.J. Batchelor shot a 63, Peyton Myers had a 64, Kyren Long shot a 67 and Marcus Burdine had a 68.
