Greencastle’s Emma Wilson added to her collection of meet records on Friday evening when she set a new standard in the Girls’ Miracle Mile in the Flashes Showcase at Franklin Central in Indianapolis.

Wilson won in a time of 4:54.94, edging runnerup Phoebe Bates of Carmel by 4.3 seconds. Wilson’s time beat the previous best set of 4:55.82 by just under one second.

The fastest outdoor time nationally this year in the 1,600 is 4:49.

“Emma came in with two goals and managed to get both, as she won and got the meet record,” GHS coach Craig Jordan said. “She had good competition in Abby Lynch and Phoebe Bates. Abby Lynch ran side by side with her the entire race and took the lead with 400 to go and Emma did a good job of being patient. I was pretty nervous for her as Lynch has some ridiculous speed, but with 200 to go Emma passed her and did not look back.”

On Thursday, Greencastle hosted Monrovia and Owen Valley in a triangular meet and finished third in both events.

“We had a gorgeous day and our team had fun,” Jordan said. “Seelye Stoffregen led the way for our girls in her first meet of the season, as she won both the hurdle races and anchored our 4x400 to a second-place finish. We had several other big performers as Rose White took third in the high jump and 400 and also helped our 4x400.

“Jada Amis continues to excel in the throws as she took third in the shot and first in the discus.”

On the boys side, the Cubs were led by Ben Gellman — who took first in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

“He’s in great shape right now and I think he’ll have a good shot to make it to regionals if he keeps it up,” Jordan said. “Jack Hutcheson was strong for us as well, as he got third in the 110s and almost won the 400 for us. Our throwers had a good day as Trever Wood got over 40 feet and Nick Sabin got us a point as he took fourth.

“With two and a half weeks until championship season begins, I think we are in a good place and I hope the good weather will keep up.”
