Four locations set for April 28 Drug Take Back Day

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 in Greencastle from 9 a.m. to noon at the upper parking lot at Greencastle High School, 910 E. Washington St.

Meanwhile, this year for the first time, there will be three other locations for the drug take-back effort on the same date and time at Cloverdale, South Putnam and North Putnam high schools.

The Putnam County PIE Coalition, Putnam County schools and Putnam County law enforcement have teamed up this year to provide more locations for the Drug Take Back Day and will have representatives from all four county schools, PIE Coalition students and local law enforcement at each location.

"We are hoping by having multiple locations so that folks will find the nearest location to them and take the time to get rid of the unwanted, expired or unused medications in their medicine cabinets," Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin said.

No sharps (needles) will be accepted. No questions are asked. It is a free service.

"We don't take names, we don't take license numbers," Chief Sutherlin assured.

This year marks the 14th Drug Take Back Day event in which the Greencastle Police Department and Greencastle High School have partnered in the project.

The effort has resulted in 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of unwanted drugs being collected, Sutherlin told the City Council at its April meeting. He said another 1,000 pounds has been collected in the box provided by CVS at the Greencastle Police Department.
