PREP ROUNDUP: South Putnam rolls past Cubs 11-1 in baseball

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

South Putnam led Greencastle just 2-0 after four innings in high school baseball action Tuesday evening, but the Eagles pushed across three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to complete an 11-1 win over Greencastle.

Dawson Cash started the fifth-inning rally by reaching on an error, and Aiden LeBlanc walked one out later. Branden Demoret followed with a three-run homer to left to give the Eagles a 5-1 cushion.

In the sixth, Hayden Switzer doubled and Hunter Croan walked to start the rally. After the next two hitters struck out, Dylan Crum reached on an error, LeBlanc and Tanner Pistelli singled and Demoret hit a double.

“Tonight was a great team win for us," South coach Brady Rhodes said. "From top to bottom our team played together as a unit, battled through some mistakes, and capitalized on opportunities as they were presented to us.”

Many of the Eagles doing the most damage are younger ones. Demoret, a sophomore, had two hits and five RBI while classmate Pistelli added one hit and one run. Switzer (two doubles, one run) and Cash (one run scored) are both freshmen.

“I’ve been particularly pleased with the learning that’s occurred with our young players," Rhodes said. "At times, we are starting seven freshmen and sophomores. That youth brings vibrancy and energy to our squad, but we’ve also emphasized with our guys that there will be growing pains as we continue to learn to compete at the varsity level.

"Tonight we took an important step forward for our program with a big win against a quality county opponent.”

Eagle pitchers Croan and Crum combined to allow just three hits, striking out three and walking four between them.

Abe Wade had a double and a single for the Cubs and Brandon Glaze added the other hit.

“I was also very happy with our pitching unit in tonight’s game," Rhodes added. "Aiden LeBlanc called a great game behind the plate, Hunter Croan gave us a solid start and Dylan Crum came in with a spectacular performance in relief.

"In a two-run ball game to come in with the bases loaded and no outs and only give up one run is huge."

Rhodes pointed to the contribution of Crum as being especially beneficial to the cause.

"There’s a reason Dylan Crum is our team captain," Rhodes said. "He showed the poise, confidence, and leadership you expect from a senior captain in that situation. Very few players can handle that type of pressure and he performed nearly flawlessly.”

The Eagles improved to 3--4 on the season, while Greencastle fell to 3-4.

"It was a tough loss, but that’s what happens when you have three days off," SP coach Johnny Briones said. "Our No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles continue to play really well. No. 1 doubles played a lot better but ran out of steam."

The Eagles have a busy finish to the week, starting on Thursday.

"Fortunately we have a practice today to work on some things before we are home with Edgewood, then at Plainfield and finish the week in a doubles tournament at Owen Valley," Briones noted.

Softball

• North Putnam 5, Sullivan 2 — At Bainbridge, the Cougars got a strong pitching performance from Chloe LaPierre and clutch hitting from several players in picking up the Western Indiana Conference win.

Sullivan scored one run in the top of the first inning, and the game went scoreless until the Cougars got three in the fourth inning. North Putnam added two more in the fifth.

"This was a really good team win for us tonight," North Putnam coach Jarrod Duff said. "Chloe kept them off balance and hit her spots on some key pitches. We played really well behind her. When we make simple plays on defense and don't help our opponents by giving them extra outs, we are a pretty good team."

Duff noted that Clarissa Gibson had a key hit in the fourth-inning rally.

"She has struggled at the plate so far this year, but she came up big with a two-RBI single with two outs and runners on second and third in the fourth inning," he said.

Duff was also pleased his team was able to overcome several obstacles in the game.

"We got down 1-0 in the top of the first and we didn’t panic," he said. "Last week against Rockville, we had to play without Mia Runnells because of an injury. Mia is really important to our team, but we didn’t dwell on not having her in the lineup. Instead we had other girls step up and make plays.

"Tonight we lost Emma Haste to an injury in the bottom of the first inning," Duff continued. "Again, we didn’t dwell on it, and had girls step up. It’s really encouraging to see the type of toughness we have shown in the last two games."

LaPierre had a single, home run and two runs scored to pace the Cougars, while Jada Stump added a double and a single with one run scored and Baylee Osburn had a single, run and an RBI.
