TERRE HAUTE —Jake Bennett and the Greencastle Tiger Cubs continued their dominance this spring by winning the Bob Arnett Invitational hosted by Terre Haute South at Rea Park.

Bennett was the top individual with a 70, while teammate Conner Taylor finished third with a 75. Camden Dal Corrobo of Speedway was second with a 73.

“A strong performance by the complete Tiger Cub team overpowered teams from around the state,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “Jake, Conner, Blaise, Jaxon and Kyle all played consistent golf throughout the day on very fast and hard greens to win their second invitational of the young season.

“Jake had a great day, playing the 18 holes without a bogey [16 pars and 2 birdies] and Conner had a chip-in birdie and some good par saves,” Paquin added. “Both players scored their season- and career-best scores.”

Paquin noted that Hasty, Parmley and Tesmer also played well to help the team secure the victory.

“We’ve been working very hard to get to this point of the season,” Paquin added. “We still have areas of concern — such as improving ball striking, hitting fairways and greens, and lowering number of putts.

“Concentration during practice and matches should take care of these problems,” he said. “I’m very pleased with this team’s progress so far.”

Cougars place ninth — At Crawfordsville, frost delayed the start of Saturday’s Southmont Invitational for 90 minutes.

Once the horn sounded and play began, the North Putnam golf team began its quest for a better showing than its results of a year ago.

Cougar coach Earl Hall noted that his team of Marcus Burdine, Peyton Myers, R.J. Batchelor and Hunter Rudes “played hard and had a much more harmonious outcome than last year’s efforts.”

The Cougars shot a 445 as team to finish ninth.

Hall noted the Cougars bettered last year’s results (527) by 82 strokes for an average drop of 20 strokes per player.

Coach Hall also reminded his young team that last year the best score for NP was 127 and the worst score was 137, while this year saw a low score of 100 with a high score of 120.

“For a team that was playing in its first 18-hole match of the year, and a team still short on high school golf experience, these results showed that the team is learning to be competitive, playing better golf, and showing maturation with the advent of every match,” Hall said.

Rudes led the Cougars with a 100, followed by Myers with a 111, Batchelor with a 114 and Burdine with a 120.

The Cougars face matches this upcoming week with Cascade/Owen Valley today, Cloverdale on Wednesday, and finish the week off on Saturday at the Tiger Cub Invitational.

Baseball

Cougars, Wolverines split — At Bainbridge, North Putnam hosted White River Valley for a doubleheader on Saturday with each team recording a win.

The Cougars won their second straight game of the season in the opener with a 6-0 triumph. WRV won the nightcap 15-5.

Austin Rader and Evan Davies combined on a two-hit shutout in the first game for the Cougars, who scored five runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Rader pitched the first five innings, allowing just leadoff singles in the fourth and fifth before giving way to Davies.

Kolten Thorson led off the big fifth-inning rally by drawing a walk. Kaine Benge reached on an error and stole second, with both runners coming home on a single by Jalen Berry.

Zach Culberson and Colton Clifford followed with singles, with Berry scoring on an error.

Nick Huff then drove home the final two runs with a single. Berry had two singles and two RBI to pace the Cougars at the plate, while Huff had one hit and two RBI and Culberson and Clifford each had two hits.

In the second game, the Wolverines scored five runs in the first and eight in the second to take command.

Dillon Binnion and Dylan Bush had singles for the only Cougar hits.

Softball

Eagles, Eels split — At Clay City, the Eels won the opener 6-2 and the Eagles came back to win the second game 7-5.

“We played well both games,” South coach Jamie Steffy said. “The difference being we weren’t able to get any two-out hits in the first game to push runs across and we were, especially late in the game, in the second game.”

The Eagles were held to three hits in the first game, as Drew Steffy, Bree Mahoney-Sutherland and Jaylen Hughbanks each got a hit. Hughbanks had the only RBI.

In the second game, Alex Steffy had three singles, two RBI and scored a run, while Helen Eaglin had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Grace Carr had two hits and two RBI and Drew Steffy and Brionna Egold each had a hit and an RBI.

“Clay City is a good team,” coach Steffy said. “Give them credit they made the plays (in the first game) they had to make to win. We had our chances, but we just weren’t able to take advantage of some situations that were presented to us to win.

“We took advantage of those in the game two win,” he added. “All in all it was a good day for the Eagle softball team.”

Tennis

Eagles have busy weekend — On Friday, South Putnam lost a tough 3-2 match to Plainfield.

The Eagles got victories from Gitte DeVreede at No. 1 singles and from the No. 2 doubles team of Addi Blaydes-Reagan Ladd.

“The girls played really well against Plainfield,” South coach Johnny Briones said. “No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles are playing some really good tennis. Gitte solid and won in straight sets, and Addi and Reagan had an exciting three-set match. They both showed some endurance and mental toughness.”

Plainfield won the JV match 6-3.

“Our JV played extremely well,” Briones said. “They are all improving day by day.”

On Saturday, the Eagles participated in the Owen Valley Doubles Tourney.

No. 1 seed Makenna Wells and Brianna Robinson “struggled a bit [going 0-3]”, Briones said, but had some close matches.

“I was proud of their work ethic and positive attitudes,” Briones said. “No. 2 seed Kaylee Hubbard and Gitte Devreede played really well considering they don’t play any doubles.”

Briones noted that his No. 3 seed team of Addi Blaydes and Reagan Ladd also finished the day 1-2.

“They played some awesome tennis, but ran out of steam at the end of the day,” he said. “They are making some really good shots and being more aggressive. ”

The Cougars won the girls’ meet with 117 points, to 24 for Riverton Parke and nine for the Rox.

NP coach Kevin Lutes is thankful for the contributions of his seniors in their careers.

“I consider myself incredibly fortunate for having been given the privilege of coaching these girls over the years,” he said. “I hope those seniors were able, at some point tonight, to soak it all in and realize how much they’ve grown during our time together. They are a tremendous group of athletes and will be greatly missed.”

North Putnam also won the boys’ meet by a large margin, recording 117 team points to 17 for Rockville and 13 for RP.
