Water quality panel set Monday at PCPL

The Putnam County Public Library will host a panel discussion on the impact of water quality on the environment and community health on Monday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m.

The program is free and open to the public.

Panelists will include Dr. Margo Tucker, assistant director of the Downstream Project and assistant counsel for energy and environment for the Citizens Action Coalition; Jeanne Pope, professor of geosciences at DePauw University, who developed a new research program in 2012 to investigate and address agricultural runoff in Putnam County with Nick Meszaros, senior geosciences major; Sheryl Myers, founding director of Heart of the River Coalition and White River Watchers; and Jody Arthur, founding member and board member of the Indiana Water Monitoring Council who has worked in the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s Office of Water Quality her entire career.

Topics of discussion are expected to include the major challenges of agriculture, coal and industry, discussion of the IDEM 303d Impaired Water list for our state, safety of recreational use of local waterways (for pets, paddlers, waders, fisherman, etc.), treatment required for different types of water (sewage, gray, drinking, etc.), environmental regulation/policy in the current era, interesting firsthand experiences or anecdotes from working in this field, and community activism and how citizens can get involved.

The library is located at 103 E. Poplar St., Greencastle.
