Greencastle’s Jake Bennett has done just about everything so far in this spring’s high school golf season except sink a hole-in-one.

Bennett checked off that box on Wednesday, acing the No. 2 hole at Windy Hill with his first career ace in his team’s 164-171 win over Tri-West.

“The Cubs had a close match with Tri-West, as some problems with course management prevented the Cubs from playing their best golf,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “Putting was difficult on the fast and breaking greens at WHCC. This was the best weather of the season that we’ve played in; and it seemed as our normally focused team was just not into the game.

“This happens at times during the season and the players just have to work through it.”

Bennett finished with a 38 to again win medalist honors, while Conner Taylor added a 40, Blaise Hasty had a 43, Jaxon Parmley had a 43, Kyle Tesmer had a 47 and Josh Bomgardner had a 51.

“Conner, Blaise, Jaxon, Kyle, and Josh hit some good shots and putts, but just couldn’t put it all together,” Paquin said. “Sometimes you have those nights. We’ll keep working to maintain focus and concentration. This was a good win over an improved Tri-West team.”

In other golf:

Greencastle 172, Cloverdale 197 — On Thursday, the Tiger Cubs got a 37 from Jake Bennett for medalist honors in defeating the Clovers.

Conner Taylor added a 43, while Jaxon Parmley had a 44, Kyle Tesmer had a 48 and Josh Bomgardner added a 49.

The Cubs were playing without two of their top seven players, as Blaise Hasty was sidelined by a strep infection and freshman Benton Parmley was out with a concussion.

“The Cubs managed to outscore the Clovers by 25 shots at WHCC on the best weather day of the season,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “Both teams hit some good shots and putts through the round. The Cub were more consistent than the Clovers.”

Paquin said his team is still having trouble with some aspects of the game.

“We are still struggling with chipping, shot making, putting and keeping the ball in play,” he said. “I think that some quality range time will take care of most of problems. The season is picking up in intensity as there are matches just about every day.

Drew Boyette led the Clovers with a 42, Jason Miller had a 49, Wyatt Helterbrand had a 52, Michael Holsapple had a 53 and Tyler Harrison had a 59.

“I saw some improvement from several players in this match,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “We are starting to see some things that we can build on. Drew had a very strong start, but fell a little at the finish. His effort was a good counter to his round Wednesday at Twin Bridges. He and Jake Bennett had a good battle through the round.”

Holsapple was the Clover top scorer on Wednesday, but did not shoot as well.

“Michael fell back a little bit,” Wokoun said. “The consistency of his game is progressing, but he needs more days like the last two to gain some needed experience. Wyatt did some things very well, and his efforts are improving. He still has some work to do, but his last two rounds have been encouraging.

“Jason finally broke through and sustained some solid play over several holes. He recovered from some difficulty much more effectively, and I think getting a few days in a row on the course is helping.”

Wokoun was encouraged by the outing.

“We finally had an afternoon of great weather on a good course, and it is what we needed most,” he said. “We need to build from this effort and continue to cut down on mistakes.”

Greencastle will host the Tiger Cub Invitational on Saturday with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Cloverdale (4-3) travels to Quail Creek Monday to play Tri-West and South Putnam.

Cloverdale 203, North Putnam 241 — Michael Holsapple was the medalist with a 45 as the Clovers beat the Cougars.

Drew Boyette added a 49, while Wyatt Helterbrand had a 53, Jason Miller had a 56 and Tyler Harrison and Cody Morris each shot a 57.

“Michael continues to make progress,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “His round scores are dropping, and he shows real promise. Drew had a very uncharacteristic round. He hit some good shots, but was not able to string things together the way he has been. Wyatt had almost a carbon copy of his last two matches — some very good holes with some others in which he can’t stay out of trouble.”

Wokoun hopes the improved weather this week will continue so his team can continue to better itself.

“Jason and Tyler are really struggling with inconsistency right now,” he said. “They are both very capable players, but have not been able to shoot a round reflecting their abilities. Cody is making some good progress, but is battling consistency as well.

“I see enough good things to be optimistic,” Wokoun said. “If we can have some extended weather cooperation, we can find our way out of the woods. Play has been so sporadic for the last ten days that it has been hard for our players to find a groove.”

North Putnam was led by Hunter Rudes with a 56, Marcus Burdine with a 60, R.J. Bachelor with a 61, Peyton Myers with a 64 and Dagan Everman with a 72.
