$4.4 million project will resurface U.S. 231 in Putnam County

Monday, April 30, 2018

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Monday initiated a resurfacing project on U.S. 231 from just south of Cloverdale to the south side of Greencastle.

Wabash Valley Asphalt was awarded the contract for $4.4 million.

The project will resurface U.S. 231 from just north of State Road 42 in Cloverdale to just south of State Road 240 (Veterans Memorial Highway) in Greencastle. The work in Cloverdale will also install ADA compliant curb ramps.

The contractor will be closing one lane of the roadway in the area they will be working and flagging motorists around the construction.

The project is scheduled for completion on Oct. 15 of this year.

INDOT reminds motorists to follow the posted work zone speed limit, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a construction zone.

  • I can see that 231 South needs repairs and reserfaced but I also see a greater need for repaving all through town- Bloomington/Washington/Jackson Streets too.

  • I drove home from work this evening on 231 from 70 north on 231. There were still signs up saying one lane road ahead and Flagger ahead. So we all slowed down to be mindful of the safety of the workers. There were no workers however, the signs were not taken down at the end of the day. I also work in construction, and safety is Paramount. Leaving signs up when there are no surveyors or flaggers or workers only serves to make the motoring public complacent and ignore such signs. Take the things down when you are not using them!

  • What hours will they be working?

  • I drive this section of road everyday and feel like resurfacing is unnecessary. In my opinion the sections of 231, 240, 40 and 36 that I travel in Putnam county are all currently in really good condition. I wish the 4.4 million had been spent on other projects.

  • Highway 231 through Greencastle is in much worse shape, yet it's not due for resurfacing until 2021 according to INDOT. Strange priorities! Much like the City of Greencastle kept putting off Indianapolis Road between Kroger and McDonalds.

  • Resurfacing of 231 at this moment appears very unnecessary. However, 231 through Greencastle certainly needs help, maybe even a rerouting.
