INDIANAPOLIS — If there is any empty space left in Emma Wilson’s trophy case, that amount got a little smaller on Sunday when the Greencastle junior was honored as the winner of the IndyStar Sports Award for being the outstanding performer in girls’ cross country last fall.

Wilson won the state championship at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course east of Terre Haute in October, coming off a double win the previous spring in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the state track meet. She earned All-American status at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., in December. Her times are among the fastest in the nation this spring.

Wilson was also named as one of eight “athletes to watch” for girls’ track this spring. That award will be presented later this summer after the state finals on June 1.

Others in the “athletes to watch” list are Simisola Akinrinsola of Ben Davis, Mikeisha Covington of Warren Central, Katie Isenbarger of Zionsville, Semira Killebrew of Brebeuf Jesuit, Ella Robinson of Zionsville, K’ja Talley, Warren Central and Shelby Tyler of Noblesville.

The IndyStar Sports Awards are sponsored by the Indianapolis Star newspaper and recognize and honor the top athletic accomplishments in Indiana High School Sports.

The awards ceremony event took place at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University.

Former Indianapolis Colts’ standout Reggie Wayne was the guest speaker.
