Track coaches pleased with county meet results

Thursday, May 3, 2018

Several personal bests were recorded in Tuesday night’s Putnam County track and field meet, in which Greencastle’s girls and South Putnam’s boys successfully defended their titles of a year ago.

Coaches from all eight squads were happy with the performance of their teams, and are all looking forward to conference meets next week and sectional competition the following week.

Here is a summary from each coach:

BOYS

Cloverdale

Coach Andy Tyler:

“I’m happy with our performance. Blake Willis has been over 12 feet for the last few meets. He has been the county champion in the pole vault for the past three years. Tyler Kaeff and Andrew Monnett repeating their 1-2 sweep in both sets of hurdles is an accomplishment they are both proud of.”

Greencastle

Coach Craig Jordan:

“Both teams did a good job of competing and some surprised themselves with big personal records. Trever Wood was very impressive for the boys as he threw a 5-feet personal best to win the shot put. Ben Gellman and Leo Weeks also set personal records in their runnerup finishes, which brought us good points.”

North Putnam

Coach Joey Holt:

“Scott Proctor had a fantastic night and was the county champ in the 100m (11.70), long jump (20-2), and 200m (24.12). Other county champs include Colton Clifford in the 400m (53.38) and Peyton Patterson in discus (122-04). Other great performances include Zach Culberson second in high jump (5-8 PR) and third in 300m Hurdles (46.94 PR); Gage Bell finishing second in the 100m (11.74); 4x400m relay team of Colton Clifford, Dillon Binnion, James Duncan and Proctor placing third and setting a PR with 3:42.15; Chris Murray finishing second in the 200m (24.22) and long jump (18-9); Caleb Duncan setting a new PR and finishing third in the 1600m (4:45.5) and 3200m (10:48); and Jordan Pope finishing third in 110m Hurdles (19.12).”

South Putnam

Coach Nathan Aker:

“We emphasized the importance of each and every point and place before the meet. We knew this would be a really close and could result with us, North or Cloverdale coming out on top. As six-point underdogs, we challenged our guys to step up, PR and avoid any sort of a meltdown. Our guys did just that. We had so many examples of guys setting new bests and passing their opponents. I was over with the throwers early, Braedan Blue and Connor Hilburn got that started and I saw it all night with guys like Karl Egold and Tyler Scroggin crushing their seeds.

“Our 4x400 relay team has been outstanding all year. To have a chance going into that event was all we could ask for. The kids took advantage of the opportunity. Without everyone pitching in, improving and performing or measuring and raking, we could not have pulled that off.

“Our seniors set the tone on Monday when the coaches left our team meeting and let them speak about the importance of this meet. Whatever they discussed must have made an impact. Their leadership and example has been top notch all season. Our seniors are: Christian Zeffel, Jared Seidler, Adair Bock, Michael Crossman, Dru Bottorff and Hendrick Milde. Sending those guys out as back-to-back county champions is something they can be proud of for a long time.

“I believe that in order to win a track meet, you’ve got to start and finish with the relays. I know some don’t believe in that but it has worked at South Putnam for a really long time. Those three wins were critical in the overall success in the meet. Our kids and coaches work hard to make sure those events are tuned up and ready to go.

“It’s really nice when your best runner is a good leader and extremely hard worker. Austin Rumley is just that. If winning the 800, 1600 and the 3200 was not enough, he anchored the 4x400 and finished off the evening going 4 for 4. He set a new personal record in the mile and in his 4x4 split. He also completed the victory lap in first place… no surprise there!

“I have to give credit where credit is due. Coach Heath Pruitt and Coach Matt Thoennes do an great job with our guys. Those guys are selfless leaders and put in many hours behind the scenes preparing our team for success. Nobody sees the detailed training plans or spring break/Saturday practices except our guys. I really appreciate their commitment and sacrifices.”

GIRLS

Cloverdale

Coach Tyler:

“Our girls 4x400 really came together to put out the win. Chelsie Edwards set our 800-meter record with her 2:26 run. We are looking good going into the big meets here at the end of the year. “

Greencastle

Coach Jordan:

“Sydney Lewis broke her school record in the pole vault by six inches. She’s ready to soar over 10 feet and we’re anxiously waiting to see it. Jada Amis won both shot and disc and tied her personal best in the shot which is currently the 18th best in state. Kennedy Trigg ran a strong 400 and was second in the long jump and Kiearra Hayes captured the 200 for us. She won all 3 of her individual events and helped our 4x400 take second. I’ve got to mention Emmy Huber too. She stepped up to the plate for us and ran the 4x400. All of the other county schools were great as well. Haven’t checked last year’s results, but this year was definitely more competitive than last year which is exciting.”

North Putnam

Coach Kevin Lutes:

“It was a great night to compete at the Putnam County track meet. Ashley O’Neal was untouchable, winning three individual events and then anchoring the 4x100 to set a school record. Hannah Sims also had a great night. We set a lot of PRs and many girls contributed to helping get second. There were a few places we should have been stronger, but overall I’m proud of our girls and how they competed.”

South Putnam

Coach Brandon Welti:

“In the field events, Caitlin Capps had a good performance in discus. She injured her shoulder and has been very limited on what she can do, so for her to come out and throw that well is pretty impressive. Autumn Allee also came out strong last night with some big PRs in both throwing events.

“On the track side, we just can’t seem to get or stay healthy. The 3200m relay team ran a controlled effort, simply looking to win the event and stay fresh for other races. Ally Nichols and Grace Burdge were able to do just that and came back with a strong showing for each of them in the 1600m. By the time that race was done, though, we had to scratch the rest of their events to prevent nagging injuries from becoming serious injuries. We already have a pretty small team, so having this many injured athletes (including Lexi Vanihel, Lillie Stein, Aubrey Hill and Maddie McHugh) really limits what we can do in the team standings.

“However, despite the struggles as a team, we are still seeing good performances from individuals. Ally Menke knocked off five seconds from her previous best in the 400m. I was really glad she was able to see such improvement from her hard work. Likewise, Rachel Carter has been pretty consistent and improving in the 100m and 200m. Although this has definitely been a bit of a rough few weeks for everyone, we’re still hopeful that everyone will be healthy enough to compete at the WIC meet and sectional meet in the coming weeks.”
