County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail on Thursday.

• At 9:33 p.m. Nathan Joseph Kemper, 19, Indianapolis, was lodged at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 1:35 p.m. Donzell DeWayne Verdon, 35, Chicago, was booked in on a local warrant and for nonsupport of a dependent child.

• At 1:28 p.m. John Thomas (Smalley) Crane Jr., 43, Lafayette, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 9:26 a.m. Brayden Levi Watson, 21, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a local warrant.

• At 8:05 a.m. Kathy Sue Weddle, 41, Fillmore, was booked in for criminal trespass.

City Police

One citation was issued recently by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 9 p.m. Thursday, Bronson Burgeson, 24, Greencastle, was cited by Officer Luke Brown.

Stopped on Percy Julian Drive near Indianapolis Road, Burgeson was ticketed for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage accidents.

• At 3:31 a.m. on Friday, William T. Groves, 30, Lebanon, was westbound on State Road 240 at the intersection of County Road 775 East in a 2002 Lincoln Continental.

Groves told Deputy Jeffery Freeman something ran out in front of him and he swerved to miss it, causing him to enter the ditch.

In the ditch, his car hit a utility pole guy wire and then a culvert, apparently rolling several times and coming to rest in a field.

Freeman said Groves appeared disoriented due to hitting his head during the collision. However, he declined medical attention.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

• At 12:23 a.m. on Friday, Zachary L. Ruble, 23, Bainbridge, was westbound on County Road 1000 North near U.S. 231 in a 1999 Subaru Legacy.

He told Deputy Freeman he swerved to miss an oncoming vehicle and entered a ditch, where he hit a utility pole, breaking it in half and pull down power lines.

The vehicle came to rest overturned in the ditch.

Ruble sustained minor injuries to his elbow and hand but declined medical treatment.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to 10 recent dispatches.

• At 12:11 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD was called to a fire alarm at 1 Taylor Place. Firefighters arrived at 12:13 p.m., discovering the alarm was due to smoking.

Firefighters reset the alarm and cleared the scene at 12:19 p.m.

• At 2:06 p.m. on Thursday, units were called to an alarm at 1420 W. CR 280 South. Arriving at 2:12 p.m., GFD responders found that the company working on the system had set it off.

Units cleared the scene at 2:19 p.m.

• At 2:36 p.m. Thursday, firefighters were called to the DePauw Julian Science Building at 602 S. College Ave. They arrived three minutes later, fiding that a pipe was leaking in a boiler. The resulting steam activated a detector.

The alarm was reset and GFD left the scene at 2:50 p.m.

• At 3:22 p.m. on Thursday, units responded to an alarm at 418 Anderson St. They arrived at 3:25 p.m.

No cause was discovered and they left the scene at 3:34 p.m.

• At 6:56 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters were called to an alarm at 304 S. Indiana St. They arrived two minutes later and found the alarm was due to cooking.

Units cleared the scene at 7:03 p.m.

• At 7:11 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters were called to 108 E. Olive St. for an alarm. They found the alarm was due to cooking.

They left the scene at 7:21 p.m.

• Additionally, firefighters performed three medical assists and had one disregard en route.
