With more free time on her hands, Austin said she plans to spend more time working around her home in the country. “I’ve got a lot of work out on the farm,” Austin said. “I love it out in the country. I couldn’t be cooped up in town.”

Having worked the early voting booths for a number of years, Austin got to spend a lot of time with fellow early voting worker Judy Miller. “I’m going to miss her in the fall,” Miller said.

After more than 30 years as a poll worker, Juanita Austin officially retired Monday at the close of early voting at the courthouse. Austin has worked with four clerks in her time manning the polls, including (below from left) Opal Sutherlin, current Clerk Heather Gilbert, Marty Watts and (not pictured) Nancy Michael.
