WIC girls' track meet notes: Cub score improves

Friday, May 11, 2018

Greencastle’s winning total in Tuesday evening’s Western Indiana Conference actually improved after the meet.

Tiger Cub hurdler Seelye Stoffregen’s time was misrecorded by the timing company conducting the meet. Stoffregen actually placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.54, not 10th as the initial results.

As a result, the Cubs’ winning total was increased to 117.5.

In other information from Tuesday’s meet:

Cougars pleased with results — North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes found a lot of positives in Tuesday’s meet, in which his team finished fifth.

“Emily Gasho threw well in discus,” Lutes said. “Ashley O’Neal had another fantastic meet. She’s shown a great deal of maturity and composure the last two meets especially.”

O’Neal finished first in the long jump, second in the high jump (with same height as winner, but in more attempts), fourth in the 100 meters and ran the anchor leg of the third-place 4x100 relay team.

Lutes noted that Alanna Nuñez, Madison Trotter, Anna Haste and Abby Spencer all had PRs in respective races.

Hannah Sims placed third in the 300 hurdles, seventh in the 100 hurdles and ran the first leg of the 4x100 relay team. Lutes said Sims didn’t place as well as she had hoped, but still ran “really well.”

“She is such a competitor,” Lutes noted. “She puts high expectations upon herself. “Cheyenne Graham threw her best in discus as well.”

The Cougars were ninth in last year’s meet, and Lutes was pleased with the improvement.

“To be one point away from fourth overall as a team and less than 10 from third, we are very pleased with where our program is heading,” he said.

Nichols breaks South record — Senior Ally Nichols finished third in the 3,200 — shattering the previous school record by 11 seconds in her debut outing in that event this season.

Coach Brandon Welti also noted his 4x800 relay team (consisting of Lexi Vanihel, Alex Fanning, Nichols and Grace Burdge) got things started well for the Eagles with a fifth-place finish.

In the 1,600, Nichols ran a PR to finish in third place, while Burdge finished in eighth place.

Overall SP finished 11th and will next be competing at the Terre Haute North Sectional meet on Tuesday.

Emma being Emma — Greencastle standout Emma Wilson continued to set new standards in her events, with new WIC meet record times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

In the 800, Wilson’s time of 2:20.05 beat the record of 2:21.26 she set last year as a sophomore. She did not run this event in the 2016 conference meet.

In the 1,600, Wilson’s winning time on Tuesday was 4:59.79 — edging the previous meet record she set as a freshman of 5:01.60.

She won the 1,600 record last year in 5:36.55.

In the 3,200, Wilson had a winning time of 10:55.33 to beat the previous meet record of 11:15.08 that she set as a freshman.

She won the event in 11:48.23 last year.
