PREP ROUNDUP: Clover softball wins pair heading into county tournament

Friday, May 11, 2018

Cloverdale’s softball team picked up wins over Linton-Stockton and Union Dugger this week to give the team momentum heading into Saturday’s Putnam County tourney.

On Tuesday, the Clovers took a 3-0 lead and used strong seventh-inning defense to hold off Linton-Stockton 3-1.

The Clovers went ahead 1-0 in the second after Kiley Shedron tripled and Sky Lowe sacrificed her home with a deep fly ball.

“We were able to execute bunts with timely hitting to score again in the sixth and seventh innings,” Cloverdale coach Jim Spencer said. “Macie Couch made several huge pitches throughout the game as the defense continually made big plays to keep Linton runners from scoring.

“This was a really solid win for our team as several members of the team contributed in different ways to preserve the win.”

Couch had two singles for the Clovers, while Autumn Lewellen added two singles and an RBI, Shedron had a triple and Holly Garretson hit a double.

Couch had five strikeouts.

On Thursday, the Clovers broke the game open with four runs in both the second and third innings in beating Union Dugger 10-1.

“This was a fairly solid outing for the Clovers,” Spencer said. “We did a good job of scoring runs early and preventing Union Dugger from getting on the scoreboard. We made just enough defensive plays to avoid a big inning and secure the win.”

Couch improved her record to 10-4 with seven strikeouts.

Shedron hit three singles and drove in four runs to lead the Clovers, while Tori Combs had a single, double, home run and three RBI, Makenzie Allen added a single, double and an RBI and Dinah Bunch, Haley Smith and Hannah Long each had a single.
