DePauw Move Out Sale to aid Family Support Services

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

“There were a ton of great deals. I bought clothes and a home appliance, and now I’m regretting not buying one of the hats or getting to the brand new bike fast enough.”

That’s what one attendee said last year during the eighth annual DePauw Move Out Sale.

On May 21 residents have an opportunity to find some great items and make an impact on the mission of Family Support Services of West Central Indiana as the organization and DePauw University’s Office of Sustainability work together to again host the DePauw Move Out Sale.

During the week of May 15, DePauw students and the Office of Sustainability will work with DePauw’s Housing Office to put donation boxes throughout the university. As students move home for the summer, volunteers from campus and the community will collect the boxes, load U-Hauls and sort them at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

Last year more than 150 members of the community came for DePauw Garage Sale and the event sold $3,000 worth of items. All funds that go directly to Family Support Services Healthy Families, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault outreach and prevention programs.

“We are very excited to host this event once again this year,” FSSWCI Director Scott Monnett said. “It’s a unique program that allows us to collect items that others don’t want and find a new purpose and home for them. Not only are we avoiding filling dumpsters with perfectly good items, but through our partnerships with other organizations and open garage sale, we are supporting individuals and families that have a need, but not the budget to purchase new, giving them a much needed items for their homes.”

Items are being collected as students begin moving out of their housing units and will conclude on the May 21. The sale will take place from on Monday, May 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the Putnam County Family Fairground Goat Barn. It is open to the public.

Furniture, mini-fridges, beds, shelving, desks, lamps, televisions and clothing are just some of the items that can be found during the event.

In addition to collecting items from DePauw students, FSSWCI is also accepting monetary donations that will be used to offset costs associated with the event and gently used items that can be sold during the sale.

Volunteers are also needed to help sort items as they are delivered to the Fairgrounds. If you, your business, family or group of friends would like to make a donation or volunteer you are urged to contact Family Support Services at 653-4820 or email info@pcfss.net

This year all of the proceeds from the event will directly go to Family Support Services of West Central Indiana.
