Northview and South Vermillion will battle today for the championship in the South Putnam girls’ tennis sectional.

South Putnam was eliminated 4-1 by Owen Valley on Wednesday evening, and Greencastle lost 3-2 to South Vermillion on Thursday. Northview beat Owen Valley 3-2 in Thursday’s other semifinal match.

Here is a look at both Putnam County matches:

Owen Valley 4, South Putnam 1 — The Eagles got a victory from No. 3 singles but were eliminated from the sectional.

“I was proud of the way the girls performed,” South coach Johnny Briones said. “We lost to a talented Owen Valley team. Stephany [Zhivotovsky] has improved leaps and bounds since the start of the season at No. 3 singles. Kaylee Hubbard, at No. 2 singles, will be returning next year — playing with more and more confidence We are looking forward to having her back next year.”

Briones was pleased with the play of his No. 2 doubles team considering its inexperience.

“It was their first time playing time together, and Brianna Robinson was a first-time player,” he said. “She and Makenna Wells both improved very much during the season, and we are looking forward to having them back.”

Briones graduates three varsity seniors.

“We are going to miss them tremendously,” he said. “No. 1 singles [Gitte DeVreede], also my lone all-conference selection, has contributed so much to the team; she made some of the other girls better players.

“No. 1 doubles [Addison Blaydes and Reagan Ladd] struggled at the beginning of the season, but after a few matches became more aggressive, confident, and were very exciting to watch.”

Briones noted those seniors, along with senior JV player Becca Perry, “displayed hard work, great attitudes, and led the team as seniors should.”

He is confident about the program’s future.

“With the number of underclassmen this year, we are looking forward to next season,” Briones said.
