BOYS' TRACK SECTIONAL: Rumley wins 800, Clovers finish 8th
TERRE HAUTE — Six individuals and one relay team will be advancing to Thursday’s Bloomington North Regional boys’ track and field meet after qualifying during Thursday night’s Terre Haute North sectional.
Highlighting the county performers was South Putnam junior Austin Rumley, who took first in the 800.
Other regional-qualifying performances came from Cloverdale’s Tyler Kaeff, second in the 110 high hurdles; Cloverdale’s Andrew Monnett, second in the 300 low hurdles; Cloverdale’s Blake Willis, second in the pole vault; North Putnam’s Scott Proctor, third in the long jump; Greencastle’s Ben Gellman, third in the 3,200; and North Putnam’s 4x100 relay team, which finished second but set a school record.
The previous Cougar record in that event was set in 2009 by a team consisting of Jarrett Ban, P.J. Enders, Kolten Everts and Jeremy Miner.
This year’s Cougar team had a time of 43.85, beating the previous mark by .38 of a second.
Cloverdale placed eighth overall to take top honors among Putnam County teams, while North Putnam was ninth, South Putnam was 10th and Greencastle was 11th.
Kaeff was also highly-seeded in the 300 low hurdles, but suffered an injury during the high hurdles and did not run the longer event.
Greencastle coach Craig Jordan was pleased with his team’s effort, and was glad that Gellman was able to continue his Tiger Cub career.
“I’m proud of the way our boys came out and competed,” he said. “ It was exciting to see them set personal bests and just flat out challenge themselves.”
Jordan noted that Chris Mitchell got a six-inch personal best in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, and Elijah Standers cut 50 seconds from his 1,600 to run 6:00 without wearing spikes.
Carter Black cut two seconds from his 300 hurdle personal best.
“The biggest highlight came from Ben Gellman,” Jordan said. “He’s always been good about jumping in the fire and being tough, but his performance in the 3,200 was by far the deepest I’ve seen him dig as he went through 800 meters in 2:28 to start the race off and still finished with a five-second personal best of 10:24.”
Last year at sectionals, Jordan noted that Gellman was the first guy not to get called back.
“He was determined not to have that happen again by achieving a top three finish to automatically qualify for regionals,” Jordan said. “I’m excited to see how he’ll rise to the occasion next week at regionals as our lone qualifier and I’m even more excited to see how our boys program will develop next year.”
