PREP ROUNDUP: Cub golfers win, Clovers nipped

Friday, May 25, 2018

Greencastle shot a 156 on Wednesday to defeat Cascade and Monrovia in a triangular golf match.

Cascade shot a 197, while Monrovia had a 224.

Greencastle’s Jake Bennett was the medalist with a 37, while Kyle Tesmer shot a 39, Conner Taylor and Blaise Hasty each shot a 40, Josh Bomgardner had a 44, Jaxon Parmley had a 45 and Benton Parmley had a 49.

“The Cubs are playing well going into the final days before the sectional,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “Everyone is doing well in ball striking, chipping, and putting. Playing the ball as it lies at this time of the year is important in scoring because your concentration must be focused on each shot to successfully execute that shot.

“Wednesday showed that the Cubs are up to the task in all phases of playing winning golf, and are looking forward to the sectional on June 1.

The Cubs will play on Tuesday at Clover Meadows against South Putnam in an 18-hole match at 1 p.m.

In other golf:

Sullivan 195, Cloverdale 196 — At Sullivan, the Clovers were edged by one stroke against the Golden Arrows at Sullivan Elks on Wednesday.

Drew Boyette of Cloverdale shot a 47 to tie Sullivan’s Connor King for runnerup medalist honors.

Jason Miller added a 49 for the Clovers, while Tyler Harrison and Wyatt Helterbrand each had a 50 and Michael Holsapple shot a 59.

“Everyone was a little unhappy with the rounds they posted, but we were leading after the first four groups,” Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. “It came down to the last group, and Sullivan’s fifth player came through. It made the round even more frustrating for us, but it emphasized the importance of each shot and doing everything possible to avoid poor execution.

“Everyone of our players could easily identify several points in their rounds where they could have made the difference in our favor.”

Wokoun noted his players still need to make some minor adjustments.

“Drew had seven OK holes, but two were a real struggle,” he said. “Jason’s round was very similar. We are striving for consist effort all the time, and we are still falling short. Tyler and Wyatt were in similar situations, although they struggled a little more at other points.”

Clovers second in triangular — At Clover Meadows on Thursday, Cloverdale shot a 197 to defeat Shakamak and lose to Martinsville.

Cloverdale’s Drew Boyette had a 43 to pace his team again, recording the third-best round of the match.

Michael Holsapple added a 49 for the Clovers, while Jason Miller had a 52, Wyatt Helterbrand had a 53, Tyler Harrison had a 58 and Josh Allen had a 64.

“Drew bounced back a little from the last match, and Michael made a big step,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “Jason had seven good holes, and the wheels fell off on the other two. Wyatt played a consistent round, which was a good step.

“Tyler played better, but is still struggling. Josh got a chance to play a varsity match, and did some good things. Both of them are feast or famine, and the bad stretches are just killing the good things they are doing.”

Wokoun knows his team must fix its problems soon.

“We are continuing to fight ourselves and it is very frustrating,” he said. “All of these guys are showing signs of being pretty good golfers, but are not able to sustain success through an entire round.

“The tournament is looming ahead, and we have to find a way to step up and eliminate mistakes,” Wokoun added. “Every one of our guys is capable of some really good things, but sustaining success through an entire round has been maddeningly elusive. If this group could get things together and play with some confidence, I think it would surprise a lot of people. I know our guys are frustrated by the challenges they are facing.”

Cloverdale (10-10) plays in the Danville Invitational at Twin Bridges on Tuesday.

Track and field

Cougar coach happy — North Putnam girls’ track coach Kevin Lutes was pleased with his team’s effort in Tuesday’s regional meet.

“Our ladies wrapped up a great season at the regional,” Lutes said, in comments received too late for Wednesday’s Banner Graphic. “Although no one advanced to the state meet, I’m proud of what these girls were able to accomplish this year.

“Cheyenne Graham bested her shot put distance by almost two feet, and Hannah Sims ran a gutsy race in the 300 low hurdles,” Lutes noted.

“I loved that all the girls were already talking about what they would do differently when they came back next year. That’s exciting.”
