CRAWFORDSVILLE — Greencastle’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Nicole Newgent and freshman Molly Ramey won the individual singles championship on Wednesday.

The Tiger Cubs were able to continue playing after their team was eliminated from the South Putnam Sectional in the alternate section of the tournament for No. 1 singles and double players who do not lose during the team competition.

Newgent and Ramey will advance to the Kokomo Regional on June 2 to meet the winners from the Kokomo Sectional.

On Wednesday, Newgent and Ramey (now 16-4 for the season) beat doubles team Hattie Duncan and Shay Oakley of Fountain Central 6-3, 6-3.

On Tuesday, Newgent and Ramey defeated Esther Bridwell and Shiley Claypool of Covington 6-4, 6-1.

The sectional championship was the second straight for Newgent. Last year, she teamed with senior Lydia Trout to claim the Crawfordsville Sectional title.

Newgent and Trout advanced to the Kokomo Regional, where they lost 6-1, 6-0 to Maddy Heiney and Payton Krahn of Homestead.
