Memorial Day at Forest Hill Cemetery

Monday, May 28, 2018
A day of reverence at Forest Hill Cemetery opened with a bit of fun and fitness as approximately 70 runners and walkers took part in the inaugural Friends of Forest Hill Memorial Day 5K on Monday, including Joe Liechty (above), one of the oldest runners, and Charlie Knuth (below), one of the youngest.

Rob and Elijah Frank chat with Honor Guard member Dick Keller prior to the start of the Memorial Day Service at Forest Hill Cemetery on Monday.
After the race, many of the runners cleared out, though several made their way up the hill for the traditional Memorial Day Service, that included a message from Peace Lutheran Church minister Matthew Schneider and a 21-gun salute (below) from the Honor Guard composed of Greencastle VFW Post 1550 and Greencastle American Legion Post 58 members.
The sunny weather provided a chance to remember loved ones entombed in the Forest Hill mausoleum or for patriotically-dressed children to simply enjoy a late spring morning in the shade (below).

  • Very good message from Pastor Schneider! Excellent turnout and a fitting remembrance of all those that have their lives for this country and our freedoms!
