It’s ‘game on’ with pickleball, cornhole at June First Friday

Monday, May 28, 2018

Some friendly competition will join the usual music and food at the June edition of First Friday as a pair of games take center stage in downtown Greencastle this Friday.

Franklin Street will feature both pickle ball and cornhole in addition to the usual First Friday fun.

Still a relatively new game to the area, pickleball will be set up just east of the north courthouse stage for local residents to learn and even give a try.

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with the next set at 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and with composite or wood paddles about twice the size of a ping pong paddle.

While there are courts at Robe-Ann Park and an already-active group of pickleball players in the community, this First Friday event serves as a way to introduce the sport to a wider audience.

Meanwhile, with cornhole already popular in Central Indiana, Main Street Greencastle will host a 10-team double elimination tournament, also taking place on Franklin Street.

The cost to enter is $20, with the winners taking $100 cash.

The tournament begins at 6 p.m. on Franklin Street. To enter, email names to tami@gcpcdc.com.

Of course, there will still be the usual musical selections that mark just about any downtown, summertime event in Greencastle.

On the north courthouse stage, DJ Big Daddy “A” will kick things off at 5:30 p.m., followed by The Lemon Brothers at 6:30 p.m.

War Radio, normally a mainstay inside the Swizzle Stick, will play outside this month, with a show beginning at 9 p.m.

On South Indiana Street, ZooSoul Drum Circle will get things started at 5 p.m., followed by Jack Gibson at 6 p.m.

MLE will finish off the night on South Indiana with an 8 p.m. set.

Downtown revelers can also enjoy food and drink specials from restaurants and vendors including Completely Nuts and Candy, Almost Home/Swizzle Stick, Bon Appetit, Bridges Craft Pizza and Wine Bar, Hatchets Barbecue, Moore’s Bar, Myers’ Market, Tap House 24, The Fluttering Duck and Wasser Brewing.

The Studio Suite Salon, a new hair salon opening at 110 S. Vine St., behind the post office, will also be hosting its grand opening from 4-8 p.m. during First Friday. The event will include raffles for prizes and services and sweet treats from Blondie’s and Brownie’s.

Game On vacation Bible school will take place in two sessions at Myers’ 5 East. Game On activities will include a lesson, music, games and activities.

Time choices include 6 and 8 p.m. Kids can be registered in advance at https://1fgameon.weebly.com/ or at the door if there are spots remaining.

Due to space, participation is limited to 50 kids per time slot. Kids going into grades first through fourth grades are welcome.

Bear Threads, Greenlight Art and Conspire: Contemporary Craft will also be open and running specials.

Vendors setting up downtown will include Nuskin – Brittany Overshiner, Dot Dot Smile – Jess Faust, Scentsy - Kim Duell, LuLaRoe – Alicia Gregg, Greencastle Hometown Dental, Kirsch Dentistry, Paparazzi – Erica McClure, Avon and Cocoa Exchange – Nikki Selig, Head Start – Pam Wade, Usborne Books & More – Nicole Waters and Crunchi – Brittany – Jagg Roofing.
