CLOVERDALE — In the final tuneup for both teams before Friday’s Attica Sectional, Greencastle defeated South Putnam 7-0 on Tuesday in match play.

Greencastle’s Jake Bennett won 4-3 over Tyler Hicks, Conner Taylor won 7-3 over Justin Pitts, Blaise Hasty won 8-4 over Ryan Neumann, Jaxon Parmley won 8-3 over Lee Haywood, Kyle Tesmer won 8-3 over Marcus Robinson, Benton Parmley won 11-3 over Brady Robinson 11-3 and Josh Bomgardner won 1 up over Levi Girton.

“The two teams played an unfamiliar scoring format, which consisted of playing holes instead of strokes,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Each player plays the hole, and whichever player has the lowest score wins the hole. To determine the winner in the match, the player that wins the most holes and is ahead by more won holes than holes left is the winner (example Player A is four holes ahead with three holes left to play is the winner of the match).”

Most of the matches were not closely contested, but Paquin noted two exceptions.

“Jake Bennett and Tyler Hicks had a good match, with Jake winning 4 up with 3 to go,” Paquin said, noting that Bomgardner won his match over Girton 1 up in 18 holes. “All the other matches were won easily by the Cubs.

“Both teams played quickly and hit many goods shots, chips, and putts,” Paquin added. “The Eagles are very young, starting four freshmen along with three seniors.

Greencastle finished the regular season with a record of 17-1 in duals, tris and quads, and looks to defend its Attica Sectional title on Friday at Harrison Hills.
