BRIANNA BROOKS of Cloverdale was named to the spring 2018 dean’s list for Ivy Tech Community College.

Brooks is enrolled at the Indianapolis/Lawrence campus.

The dean’s list gives recognition to degree-seeking students who achieve a minimum 3.50 grade point average in non-academic skills advancement courses with no Ds or Fs while earning six or more Ivy Tech credits during the semester and have earned at least a total of 12 non-academic skills advancement credits during their course of study.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has approved South Putnam Community School Corporation to begin awarding the Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate to seniors starting with the class of 2019.

This is part of South Putnam’s continuing focus on college and career readiness.

The South Putnam guidance department coordinated with community liaison Karen Nelson Heavin to build partnerships with local businesses to make this happen.

Seniors obtaining the Work Ethic Certificate must demonstrate five attributes including persistence, respectfulness, initiative, dependability and efficiency. They must also complete criteria related to grade point average, attendance rate, discipline, community service and job application.

“South Putnam already has agreements with several local businesses stating that students graduating with a Work Ethic Certificate will be guaranteed an interview for a job within their skill set,” Director of Curriculum and Tech Integration Tona Gardner said. “They strongly value the qualities demonstrated through this program and will consider them as they look to hire new employees. These business partners recognize that attendance, aptitude in learning new skills, initiative and other attributes are important in successful employment.”

The Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate also has value outside of our local community. Businesses throughout the state prioritize applicants with this certification.

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education recently honored Cloverdale High School and North Putnam Senior High School at the second annual FAFSA Completion Awards Ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse.

The ceremony commemorated the end of this year’s Indiana Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) season by honoring 130 Hoosier high schools that had 70 percent or more of their 2018 seniors file the FAFSA on time.

Last year, the Commission honored 114 high schools with a 60 percent or higher completion rate to attend the inaugural FAFSA Completion Awards Ceremony.
