District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) has been selected to serve on the Interim Study Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources.

State Rep. Jim Baird

Baird said in the upcoming months, the committee will examine several topics, including the regulation of industrial hemp, industrial hemp products and the manufacturing of low THC hemp extract.

He said this committee will not be studying medical marijuana, with that topic assigned to the Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health and Human Services.

"The ag and natural resources study committee will be examining the regulation of industrial hemp and products made from industrial hemp," Baird said. "The research gathered by the committee will help lawmakers make informed decisions on possible legislation."

Baird said interim study committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, can be viewed live online at iga.in.gov. This site also provides committee calendars and meeting agendas. Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify.

Baird, who currently represents all of Putnam County and portions of Clay, Morgan, Owen and Parke counties, did not seek re-election to the District 44 seat and is instead the Republican candidate for the District 4 U.S. Congress seat in the November general election.

His son, Beau, is seeking the District 44 seat, facing off against Democrat Kim Fidler of Greencastle.
