Megan Green chosen as 2018 Putnam County Star
There will be good news on the line the next time Megan Green calls her husband in Kuwait.
Not only will Megan be able to tell Sgt. Zachary Green that she has an extra $500 in her pocket, but she can also say that she is the 2018 Putnam County Star.
The annual singing competition concluded Tuesday evening at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, with Green getting the best of a field of 12 finalists who entertained fair crowds during the two-night event.
In all, the event raised $2,000 for 4-H programs in Putnam County.
A Martinsville native, Green recently moved to Roachdale, where she and her husband, a Putnam County native, will live when he returns.
Green was one of six contestants left standing when Putnam County Star organizer, and inaugural winner, Melissa (Claycomb) Warner, read her name.
“I honestly didn’t know what to expect,” Green said. “This was my first time doing it. I was excited.”
For her final night performances, Green chose the songs of a couple of female country music heavyweights, opening the night with Martina McBride’s “Broken Wing” then concluding with Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name” after the field had been trimmed to six.
It was enough to get the better of fellow finalists Addison Hughes, Ivy Smith, Jordan O’Neal, Ashley Wilson and Savanna Junkin.
Like past winners and contestants, Green said she built a supportive relationship with her fellow contestants during rehearsals and performances.
“Everybody was just a huge support. Everybody said to me, ‘You will meet your family here,’” Green said of the close bonds formed in the competition.
She steps into a family that now includes six winners: Warner in 2013, Cord Watkins in 2014, Tony Patrick in 2015, Shelley Robbins in 2016, Marin Nally in 2017 and now Green.
Warner, Patrick, Robbins and Nally were all involved in the 2018 production in some way.
