Tuesday, July 31, 2018

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Herr (Matt) von Huber, presents the annual Forest Park Oktoberfest Sunday, Aug. 5, rain or shine.

The special edition concert will begin at 7:15 p.m. with its wandering Oom-Pah Band.

The full concert is set for 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Many of the band’s German selections were gifts from the late Maurice Swander, a saxophonist in the Jackson Township Community Band, who made frequent trips to Germany through the years.

Franz von Suppe (1819-1895) wrote many works for band and orchestra. The Brazil Concert Band will perform his “Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna” and “Jolly Robbers.”

From the military bands during the reign of the Kaisers come “Kaiser Parade” by Franz von Blon, “Florentiner March” by Julius Fucik, “Bayerischer Defiliermarsch” by A. Scherzer, “Under the Double Eagle” by J.F. Wagner and “Alte Kameraden” by Carl Teike.

Two medleys, one of polkas and one of waltzes, both arranged by Franz Bummer titled “Egerlander Volksweisen” will get the audience dancing.

Overture “Eroica” based on music by Ludwig van Beethoven and arranged for band by Joseph Skornicka is on the playlist.

Finally, the classic arrangement by George Briegel of “Beer Barrel Polka” will close out this year’s German concert.
