A small, early-morning fire at Tractor Supply Co. did limited damage to the East Side business on Thursday.

At 4:56 a.m., local emergency responders were called to a fire alarm at the 25 Putnam Plaza retailer.

A Greencastle Police officer was the first on the scene, noticing some smoke in the building and calling in a box alarm for the Greencastle Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter at 5:01 a.m. and made entry into the store.

They found the source of the smoke was a small fire in the baby chick area of the store.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 5:19 a.m., using less than 100 gallons of water.

GFD units remained on the scene for more than two hours as they worked to ventilate the building to get smoke and carbon monoxide levels down. The last firefighters cleared the scene at 7:11 a.m.

The investigation is not complete, but investigators believe the cause of the fire was electrical.

TSC had not opened for the day as of 9 a.m., with a store representative only saying, “We are closed due to an incident.”
