Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:47 p.m. on Saturday, Clyde D. White, 44, Coatesville, was pulling out of a parking spot at the Heritage Lake Clubhouse in a 2016 Dodge Ram. White told Deputy Daniel Birt that he did not see that the boat he was pulling was not going to clear the vehicle next to him.

The boat trailer hooked the bumper of a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche registered to Joel Moore of Martinsville.

White’s trailer pulled the bumper completely off of Moore’s truck.

Birt estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:35 a.m. on Saturday, Michael H. Hendershot, 21, Spencer, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado when he ran off the road.

The vehicle went into a ditch on the east side of the road before rolling several times before coming to rest in the northbound lane of U.S. 231.

Hendershot told Deputy Brian Helmer that he fell asleep while driving.

Hendershot had blood on his arms and head. Helmer asked if he was OK and he said he thought he was, but something hit him in the head.

Helmer told Hendershot that because something hit him in the head and he was bleeding, he was going to call a medic.

The vehicle was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sarah M. Grimes, 36, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 250 East near 100 North in a 2005 Mazda MPV when she failed to navigate a 90-degree turn, traveling off the road and into a bean field, coming to rest in a ditch.

Grimes left the scene and failed to contact law enforcement, walking several miles.

A third party called police and Deputy Anthony Brown responded. Grimes was located and found to be under the influence of alcohol. She tested at .08 blood alcohol content on both the portable breath test and the certified test.

Grimes was taken to the jail and booked in at 4:07 a.m. for driving while intoxicated as well as being issued a citation for driving without financial responsibility.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:12 p.m. on Wednesday, Gloria Baumunk, 74, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 40 just west of County Road 75 West in a 2010 Ford Edge.

She told Deputy Riley Houghton a dog ran into the road and she could not avoid the animal.

Houghton estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 10:12 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, Brent A. Harbaugh, 21, Kingwood, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 231 approaching County Road 350 North in a 2017 Jeep Compass. Brandon M. Dickey, 19, Roachdale, was in front of Harbaugh in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze.

Harbaugh said he saw Dickey slowing down and he proceeded into the southbound lane in order to pass. He said Dickey displayed his middle finger before turning into his vehicle.

Dickey told Deputy Brown he was slowing to make a left turn onto 350 North and had displayed a left turn signal before turning. As he was making the turn, he made contact with Harbaugh’s vehicle.

A witness to the crash also said she saw Dickey display the left turn signal before making the turn.

Brown also said that the area is a no-passing zone for northbound traffic.

Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
