CLOVERDALE — South Putnam’s girls’ golf team lost 202-207 to Cascade on Thursday, but coach Cassie Lehmann was happy her team continued its progress since the beginning of the season.

“The girls shot our best score of the year at a 207,” Lehmann said, noting the team shot a 233 against Cascade last year and dropped 26 strokes from that match. “Our lowest individual score last year against Cascade was a 58 — whereas this year all of our counted scores were under a 54. That is quite the change.”

Lehmann is pleased with how her team is playing.

“There is great improvement in the game these girls are playing this season,” she said. “Even though we didn’t beat Cascade, we really held our own against them.

Kate McCammack led the Eagles with a 48, tying for runnerup medalist honors. Alex Steffy had a 52, Drew Steffy had a 53, Leighla Hazlett had a 54 and Kortnee Starks had a 58.

West Vigo 4, North Putnam 1 (girls) — West Vigo scored its first two goals on penalty kicks in the first half and never trailed.

“The Lady Cougars were forced to play with just 10 players for close to 60 minutes after Hannah Sims picked up a red card near the end of the first half,” North coach James Hilton said. “The girls played hard in 90-degree heat, down a person, and never gave up in a very physical game.”

Sophia Lotzow had the goal for the Cougars, who play at North Montgomery on Thursday.

West Vigo 3, North Putnam 0 (boys) — The Cougars were down a couple players due to injury, coach Kyle Morgan noted.

“West Vigo was a very fit team, which played into their hand,” Morgan said. “The Cougars had a few chances on goal but couldn’t capitalize.”

North is back in action Thursday at home against Bethesda Christian.
