Seven of 35 rooms tested at Tzouanakis Intermediate School still have elevated mold spore counts.

As such, the students of Tzouanakis will remain relocated at other points in the district through the beginning of next week, Greencastle Supt. Jeff Hubble announced Thursday evening.

Hubble made the announcement in a 7 p.m. email to Tzouanakis parents.

“Of the 35 classroom samples taken, seven came back with a slight elevation for the same mold spore — penicillium,” Hubble wrote. “This means that we will go to the next level of treatment for these rooms.”

“Next level” means calling in outside cleaning experts.

“Over the weekend, Indiana Restoration and Cleaning will be coming to TZ,” Hubble wrote. “This company specializes in this type of problem. They will be cleaning all horizontal surfaces, running air scrubbing units with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters, fogging the rooms and unit vents (heater/air conditioner) with Concrobium, and specially cleaning carpeted areas, like the media center.”

Then on Monday, Moisture Management will return to conduct more air quality tests, with the next round of results delivered two or three days later.

All of this means that students will remain at alternate locations through Friday and into the beginning of next week.

For third-grade and fourth-grade students, this is the status quo — school at Deer Meadow Primary and Ridpath Primary, respectively.

However, fifth-grade students will be moving into a different classroom environment beginning Monday.

“We are providing fifth-grade teachers with individual classrooms at GHS beginning Monday,” Hubble wrote. “The fifth-grade teachers have done an amazing job of creating a STEM camp environment at McAnally Center since the relocation.”

School officials discovered on Monday, Aug. 27 that reliable mold spore levels were not available for Tzouanakis and made the decision to close the building until further notice.

Tzouanakis students did not attend school on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and have been at the alternate locations for more than a week.

Hubble also took time to thank the school PTOs for supporting the faculty and staffs at each of the five Greencastle schools during a trying time.

“We are the GCSC family and it takes each one of us,” Hubble wrote.
