Banner Graphic: You have participated in a wide variety of sports. What do you like about them, and what have you learned from them?

Bailey Shuee: “My freshman and sophomore years I played volleyball, basketball and ran track. I started playing golf last year along with basketball. I’ll play those two my final two years of high school. I like track and golf because they are individual sports, and if I was having a bad day it was all on me. I really like the team aspect of the others. I like the team aspect of basketball and volleyball. I love my basketball team. I have learned how to control my emotions better throughout the years of playing, and how to work with a team.”

BG: The golf season is coming to an end. How is the state tourney shaping up for you?

BS: “I hope to be able to get out of the sectional. Last year, our team got out of the sectional and played in the regional but I’m not sure that’s going to happen this year.”

BG: The basketball team came in second in the sectional and the conference last year, and you have a new coach this year. How’s that going?

BS: “We are hoping to get over the top this year. I’m kind of nervous about having a new coach, but our team things were good this summer. We played in lots of tournaments and got knocked down a couple of notches. We got better as the summer went along, and coach [Tod] Windlan is going to be a great coach. Our team is super close and we’re going to fight to the end.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school?

BS: “I’m still thinking about that. I’m not sure if I want to try to play golf somewhere. I have had a couple of coaches talk to me about that. It just depends on the size of the school and how far away it is. I would like to go to a medium-sized school. My mom works at DePauw, so they have the tuition exchange program and I could go there or one of several other schools. I want to go into nursing. It could change, depending on the first classes you take in college. I like helping people out and I find that really rewarding.”

BG: What do you at school that is not sports-related?

BS: “I am the yearbook editor. I really enjoy that, and I love my staff. It’s a hard job, but I have learned a lot about planning and organization. I’m starting to get down a routine and having a schedule for getting things done. I think the end result is going to be rewarding.”

BG: What kinds of things do you do outside of school?

BS: “I work at the Putnam Inn as a server. I love the interaction with people, and I work with a lot of my friends. It’s not what I want to do forever, but it’s a great job to have in high school. I have recently started to read a lot more and I’m enjoying that. I used to hate books and reading, but I’ve really grown to like it. I like to read all kinds; some fiction and some autobiographies. It’s cool to read from a book instead of it all being fake. I like to hang out with my friends. Movies are fun. I love movies of all kinds. I like ‘Armageddon’, even though it’s pretty old and it’s not very realistic. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I like ‘New Girl’. That show is so funny. I am a big music fan, and I listen to everything.”

BG: What are your favorite and least favorite foods?

BS: “My favorite food is kind of a weird one: Tomatoes with bleu cheese. I love my parents’ tomatoes out of the garden. I am a huge foodie. I don’t really dislike that many foods. Sauerkraut is one. I don’t like Reubens.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

BS: “I would like to go to California and surf. That would be fun, challenging and hard. I have never been out West. I’ve been to Florida a lot of times, but I’ve heard California is really pretty.”

BG: If you could describe your personality in one word, what word would it be?

BS: “Passionate. I am passionate about everything I do. Whatever I’m doing I give it my best, whether it’s school, sports, my job or my friends. I don’t like it when people do things halfway.”

BG: Do you have any pets?

BS: “I have a dog named Marbles. She’s a rat terrier; she’s tiny and she’s super cute. I have been begging my mom to get a black Labrador puppy.”

BG: Summarize your overall Greencastle High School experience?

BS: “It’s been great. I haven’t felt like it’s gone fast until this year. It’s been very incredible and rewarding. Greencastle is a great school, and everybody is friendly. I wouldn’t want to go to another high school. I like the size of it, and I like the teachers. They are all very caring.”

BG: After college, wherever that is, have you thought about where you would like to live?

BS: “I’ve thought about being a traveling nurse. That is a great opportunity to explore. I don’t know if I‘ll end up in Greencastle or not.”
