Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated six recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:10 p.m. on Sunday, Garry W. Fisher, 66, Fillmore, was westbound on State Road 240 near the intersection of County Road 425 East in a 1999 Chevrolet Astro.

Fisher told Sgt. Kyle Gibbons he looked down to grab his granddaughter’s pacifier off the floorboard which led to the vehicle leaving the north side of the road.

The van drove through multiple low-hanging tree branches and two smaller trees before hitting a large tree.

Fisher was not injured at the scene and signed a statement of release. However, his granddaughter was taken to Putnam County Hospital for further evaluation. Gibbons reported that there was no immediate cause for concern.

The vehicle was towed due to extensive damage. Gibbons estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 6:07 p.m. on Sunday, Bobby L. Gipson, 55, Fillmore, was eastbound on Heritage Drive stopped at the intersection with Patriots Landing Drive in a 2014 Dodge Ram. Gipson was preparing to turn north on Patriots Landing Drive.

Casting Henrichs, 33, Bainbridge, was also eastbound in a 2009 Ford Edge when she rear-ended Gipson’s truck.

Gipson told Sgt. Gibbons he saw Henrichs with her head down just prior to the crash.

Both vehicles were drivable and Henrichs left her insurance and registration with Gipson and departed the crash scene before Gibbons’ arrival.

Gibbons eventually made contact with her and she said she had to meet her ex-husband at her residence to get her daughter.

Gibbons estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 8:32 p.m. on Saturday, Jamison R. Wastes, 22, Reelsville, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado when he hit a deer.

Sgt. Gibbons estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, Travis B. Mader, 33, Spencer, was exiting the parking lot at 1520 Indianapolis Road, Greencastle, in a 2017 Dodge Ram 4500 pulling a trailer hauling a John Deere tractor.

A witness told Deputy Brian Helmer he saw the tractor hit the Dollar General sign as he left the parking lot, causing heavy damage.

The witness followed the vehicle to U.S. 40 and U.S. 231, where Helmer was sitting stationary. Helmer stopped Mader, who said he did not realize he had hit anything, saying he would have thought he would have heard the collision.

Helmer told Mader he would have to complete an accident report and that Mader would need to contact his insurance company. Mader was not happy about the accident report, but Helmer told him the witness’s name would be included so that the insurance company could contact him.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, Theresa A. Hiday, 64, Fortville, was stopped eastbound on State Road 42 at U.S. 231 in a 2007 GMC Yukon. She told Deputy Helmer she did not see another driver approaching and pulled into U.S. 231.

Alan C. Horne, Bloomington, was southbound on 231 in a 2001 Chevrolet S10. He told Helmer that Hiday pulled into his path and he could not avoid a collision. Besides his pickup, the trailer and lawn mower he was pulling were also damaged.

Horne was transported to Putnam County Hospital for treatment. Hiday complained of pain but refused to be transported to the hospital.

Two witnesses in other vehicles also said that Hiday pulled out in front of Horne.

Both vehicles, as well as the trailer and mower, were towed. Helmer estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 10:46 p.m. on Friday, Lonnie R. Bryant, 42, Fillmore, was southbound on County Road 500 East approaching the stop sign at State Road 240 in a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. Peyton R. Walker, 21, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2002 Ford Escort.

Sgt. Gibbons reported that Bryant failed to yield right-of-way and Walker could not avoid a collision. Walker’s vehicle ended up in ditch on the south side of the road.

Walker’s vehicle had to be pulled out of the ditch, but both cars were driven from the scene.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.
