Eagles back in action — For what coach Brandon Welti said felt like “the first time in a long time,” the SPXC teams were able to finally compete in another 5K race on Saturday at the Avon Invitational.

For the Eagle girls, it was the first race since Clay City on Sept. 6, and for the boys it was their first 5K since the Eagle-Clover Classic in mid-August.

“Breaking from the norm this season, the weather was sunny and hot,” Welti said. “Despite the warm weather, both teams took advantage of the chance to race again and put together solid performances. There were many personal records and season bests for both teams.”

Leading the girls’ team was senior Samara Young.

“After being named Homecoming Queen the night before, her majesty came back the following morning ready to race,” Welti said. “She led the girls with an 18th-place finish and season-best time. Not too far behind was homecoming princess Catherine Hodge, also finishing with a personal best time.”

Welti noted that Sarah Jones also ran a personal record 5K.

With Lilly Vittetow and Ally Menke rounding out the scoring, the Eagles finished fourth overall among eight teams.

For the boys, Austin Rumley ran a strong race and led the Eagles with a seventh-place finish and a season-best time.

Each of the SP runners came in with season-best or personal-best times to help the boys finish in sixth place as a team.

The SPXC teams will next be competing at an invitational in Edgewood today.
