Potential sectional opponents climbing in prep grid rankings

Two Western Indiana Conference teams received votes in this week’s Associated Press high school football ranking, while several potential sectional opponents for Putnam County teams continue to move up.

In Class 4A, Northview moved into the top 10 for the first time this season at the No. 10 spot. The Knights are 5-0, and include wins over Class 5A Terre Haute North and Class 3A No. 15 Sullivan on its resume.

The Arrows, who host Greencastle on Friday, returned to the rankings this week with two voting points.

Monrovia, which is 4-1 and has only lost to Class 2A No. 2-ranked Triton Central, is No. 13 in Class 3A. The Bulldogs are in Sectional 30 along with Greencastle.

In Class 2A, undefeated Western Boone has been elevated to the No. 1 spot this week. The Stars are 5-0 and received eight first-place votes.

Tipton is No. 3, also with a 5-0 record and one first-place vote.

Both Western Boone and Tipton are in Class 2A Sectional 38 along with North Putnam and Cloverdale.

Undefeated Evansville Central maintained the No. 3 spot in the Class 4A rankings. The Bears, coached by former South Putnam coach Troy Burgess, received one first-place vote.

WIC soccer playoffs

The Western Indiana Conference has announced its crossover playoff matchups for Saturday.

Northview will play at Cascade in the boys’ championship match, while the Knights will play at Edgewood in the girls’ first-place match.

In boys’ action, Greencastle plays at Edgewood in the fifth-place match and North Putnam plays at Owen Valley for seventh place.

Greencastle’s girls play at Owen Valley for seventh place. North Putnam’s girls finished in ninth place and do not have an East Division team to play in a crossover match.

Boys’ matches begin at 10 a.m. and girls’ matches at noon.
