Greencastle’s Emma Wilson won the Western Indiana Conference cross country meet for the fourth straight year to highlight Putnam County performances in Saturday’s event at South Putnam.

Wilson, the defending state champion, won in a time of 18:16.8 and defeated Edgewood’s Annalyssa Crain by 12.2 seconds.

Cloverdale’s Chelsie Edwards placed seventh and teammate Lily Monnett was 11th for the Clovers, while South Putnam’s Samara Young was 12th.

The top 15 individuals earned all-WIC honors.

Edgewood won the team title with 33 points to easily outdistance runnerup Northview.

North Putnam was fifth (despite not having anyone in the top 15), while Cloverdale was sixth, Greencastle was seventh and South Putnam was eighth.

Austin Rumley placed fourth in the Western Indiana Conference cross country meet on Saturday to earn all-WIC honors.

In the boys’ meet, South Putnam’s Austin Rumley placed fourth overall and was the only Putnam County runner to earn all-WIC honors.

Northview won the team title with 44 points, while Edgewood was second with 61.

North Putnam, which had swept the Putnam County titles earlier last week, was fourth in the team standings — edging out fifth-place South Putnam just as in the county meet.

Cloverdale was eighth in the team standings while Greencastle did not have enough runners for the team competition.

Edgewood’s Austin Haskett won the individual title.

Comments from Putnam County coaches:

North Putnam’s Kevin Lutes: “I was very pleased with how our kids raced today. In total, all but three kids ran their personal best this season which is saying a lot for a hilly course! I love that they are seeing such positive results from working so hard this season. We are excited to see what happens in Sectionals.”

Cloverdale’s Andy Tyler: “I am very happy with our performance today. Our girls ran extremely well. Lily and Macie were both down about their performances at the county meet. They ran with some purpose today, and they both hit personal bests on this course. Chelsie and Rylan set a great pace as our front runners. Our boys team continues to improve week by week. We are looking forward to the tournament.”

South Putnam’s Brandon Welti: “The conditions for racing on Saturday were perfect for the WIC meet at South Putnam. The girls’ team ran first and were led again by Samara Young. Samara stuck with her usual strategy of progressively moving up over the course of the race. She was around 20th place after the first mile and made her way up to 12th by finish, earning her All-Conference title. Lilly Vittetow, Catherine Hodge, Sarah Jones and Ally Menke all ran well, improving their times quite a bit from Tuesday’s meet. Together, these girls ran well enough to finish in eighth as a team. The boys’ team also had a great meet, all running much faster than they did on the same course at the county meet on Tuesday. Austin Rumley again led the way for the boys. He was in the chase pack the entire race and finished in fourth place, earning All-Conference honors. Rounding out the scoring for the boys were Eric Hinkle, Karl Egold, Andrew Carr, and Eli Smith. The boys as a team ran to a strong fifth-place finish.”

Greencastle’s Craig Jordan — “The girls recorded their best performances of the season which was phenomenal. The weather and level of competition definitely played a big part. The confidence they’re gaining is crucial as we will need to perform well at Sectionals if we are to qualify out as a team. We believe we have more to give and we’re excited to see how things will shake out on Saturday.”

All Putnam County schools will return to South Putnam on Saturday for the sectional.
