ISTEP+ scores show mixed results for Putnam County schools

Monday, October 8, 2018

With the transition from ISTEP+ to ILEARN ongoing in the state’s attempt to assess Indiana Academic Standards, the Indiana Department of Education recently released the spring 2018 ISTEP+ scores.

Putnam County schools showed a mix of gains and losses compared to their 2017 results.

South Putnam Schools saw an increase in students passing both English language arts (ELA) and math for grades 3-8 as well as grade 10, with 50.8 passing both in 3-8 (up from 46.3) and 28.8 percent passing both in grade 10 (up from 27.3).

North Putnam Schools saw some scores remain stable while others slid a bit. The percentage of students passing ELA and math in grade 3-8 was 55.4, down only slightly from 44.4 the year prior. In 10th grade, 32.3 percent passed both assessments, compared to 41.9 in 2017.

At Cloverdale Schools the news was mixed, with 50 percent of students passing both assessments in grades 3-8, compared to 48.8 last year. Meanwhile, 32.3 percent of 10th-graders passed both, down from 41.9 in 2017.

Greencastle Schools showed mild to moderate regression in both categories. In grades 3-8, 45.7 percent of students passed both assessments, compared to 46.8 in 2017. Among 10th-graders, 20.8 percent passed both assessments, compared to 31.2 a year earlier.

Statewide, 50.7 percent of students in grades 3-8 passed both ELA and math assessments, while 33.7 percent of 10th-graders passed both.

  • Wow. This is an eye opener. For Greencastle, the only 2 metrics where the kids outperformed the state average were 10th grade science and social studies for grades 5&7. This I think is woefully inadequate. Let’s assume the teachers have no idea what will be on these tests. One would think that at least a third of kids in 10th grade could pass both tests with decent classroom preperation. What happens to students between 8th and 10th grade that makes their scores seem so horrible?
