INDIANAPOLIS — Greencastle’s Emma Wilson won the Ben Davis Regional cross country meet for the third straight year to lead three Putnam County athletes earning advancement to Saturday’s Shelbyville Semistate.

Wilson, who finished second in the event as a freshman, placed first with a time of 17:49.86 to defeat runnerup Kately Wasson of Zionsville by 38.05 seconds.

Cloverdale sophomore Lily Monnett earned her second straight semistate appearance by placing 31st overall, and ninth among runners not on one of the five advancing teams, in a time of 20:34.19.

South Putnam’s Austin Rumley also earned his second straight semistate appearance, finishing 15th overall and third among runners not on advancing teams. He had a time of 16:33.30.

Greencastle coach Craig Jordan said his runners had “easily the best race of the season for our team” at the regional.

“All of the girls were outstanding and we were able to meet our team goals,” he said. “They all had fun, competed well and walked away happy. I believe on average the girls dropped around 60 seconds from their season bests.”

Jordan noted that Dale Thomas had the biggest performance, as she dropped 3:20 from her personal best and ran 25:55.

“Coming down the straightaway, I would say that she had the best finishing sprint on our team,” Jordan said. “Just absolutely amazing, especially considering she was an alternate and we did not decide to run her until 30 minutes before the start of the race. Emma successfully won regionals over a great field, which was another positive.”

Jordan said his team owes a “big thanks” to Avon’s squad.

“They provided one of our girls with a pair of spikes, as she was unable to locate hers when we arrived at the meet,” Jordan said. “The sportsmanship they showed us was amazing and reduced a lot of pre-race stress.”

Cloverdale coach Andy Tyler was proud of our runners, noting that Seth Geiger was unable to compete on Saturday due to injury.

“Rylan and Chelsie ran hard, and Lily hit a PR,” he said. “We are looking to hit another one next week at semistate.”
