County Jail

Six people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Thursday

• At 5:34 a.m. Thomas Lee Story, 27, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a Tippecanoe County warrant.

• At 3:14 a.m. Emory Ray Stout, 36, Spencer, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

Wednesday

• At 12:20 p.m. Shayne Craig Frost Jr., 19, Bainbridge, was lodged at the jail on revocation of work release.

• At 11:10 a.m. Chris Lee Hutto, 41, Fillmore, was taken into custody on a court order.

• At 9:34 a.m. Dontayja Notosha McKeller, 20, Indianapolis, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 9:19 a.m. William Tyler Fox, 29, Greencastle, was booked in on a pair of local warrants.

City Police

Two recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 12:28 a.m. Thursday, Jaime Arias, 22, Corona, Calif., was arrested by Sgt. Eric Vaughan following a traffic stop at State Road 240 and Percy Julian Drive.

Arias was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on an outstanding California warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of battery. California authorities planned to extradite the suspect, aka “Jimmy” Arias, City Police said.

• At 10:13 a.m. Tuesday, David Walker, 28, listed as homeless, was arrested by Capt. Chris Jones at the Beyond Homeless shelter, 309 E. Franklin St., Greencastle.

Lodged at the Putnam County Jail, Walker was charged with criminal trespass.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated 12 recent property-damage crashes.

• At 11:16 p.m. on Tuesday, James McFerron, 57, Poland, was westbound on State Road 42 in a 2016 Chevrolet Spark when he hit a deer.

Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 1:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Katelynn M. Campbell, 16, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 36, approaching U.S. 231 in a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Alisha N. Cummings, 29, Bloomingdale, was also westbound in a 2017 Ford F250.

Campbell told Deputy Scott Ducker a vehicle in front of her slowed to turn left onto 231 and she applied her brakes to slow down.

Cummings said she saw Campbell apply the brakes and attempted to stop but could not, rear-ending Campbell’s vehicle.

Ducker estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 3:37 p.m. on Sunday, Brittany M. Helton, 28, Beech Grove, was northbound on State Road 243 near U.S. 40 in a 2004 Hyundai Sonata.

Helton told Deputy Ducker that she lost control rounding a curve, sliding off into a ditch on the west side. She then hit a tree head-on.

The car was towed. Ducker estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 11:36 p.m. on Saturday, Wayne E. Holland, 27, Indianapolis, was traveling on Interstate 70 near the 34-mile marker in a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

Holland told Deputy Daniel Birt a truck swerved into his lane and he overcorrected, putting the vehicle into the median. The car then contacted the cable barrier in the median.

Holland refused EMS treatment at the scene.

The car was towed. Birt estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 9:03 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, Kaitlin M. Spay, 27, Muncie, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 800 West in a 2008 Honda Element when she hit a deer.

Deputy Riley Houghton estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 3:32 p.m. on Friday, Emily S. Varvel, 21, Brazil, was westbound on County Road 100 South, approaching County Road 550 West in a 2003 Chevrolet Tracker.

Varvel told Deputy Scott Ducker that as she came around a 90-degree turn she met a vehicle that crossed the centerline and clipped the side of her vehicle. She lost control of the vehicle, running off the south side of the road, hitting a telephone pole and knocking over some fence.

The other vehicle fled the scene. Varvel had no description or information on the other vehicle.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500. Ducker was assisted at the scene by Deputy Brian Helmer.

• At 5:43 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, Kirsten B. Southwood, 18, Spencer, was stopped in traffic on for an accident scene on County Road 275 East near County Road 350 South in a 2012 Honda Accord. Dolly Helton, Cloverdale, was also stopped in a 2015 Dodge Ram.

Southwood attempted to back out of her lane of travel, hitting the front of Helton’s truck with the right rear of her car.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, Joshua A. Kingery, 36, Terre Haute, was eastbound on U.S. 40 just west of County Road 200 West in a 2009 Toyota Yaris when he hit a deer.

Lt. Donnie Pettit estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 1:38 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, Haley R. McKamey, 20, Brazil, was northbound on Manhattan Road just south of County Road 575 East in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix when she lost control on wet pavement.

The vehicle spun out of control, hitting a mailbox and an embankment.

The car was towed. Lt. Pettit estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 12:55 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, Rex N. Brown, 80, Reelsville, was stopped eastbound on U.S. 40, waiting to turn left onto northbound U.S. 231 in a 2003 Chevrolet K2500 truck. Logan J. Coomer, 26, Terre Haute, was stopped westbound at the intersection waiting to proceed straight through in a 1999 Ford F350.

Brown told Deputy Ducker that he proceeded into the intersection for his turn when Coomer also moved forward, hitting his truck. Coomer said he had the green light and did not see Brown’s truck until it turned in front of him.

A witness in a different vehicle also said Coomer had the green light.

Brown’s vehicle was towed. Ducker estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 2:29 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, Michael J. Kavanaugh, 64, Mooresville, wast attempting to turn eastbound onto U.S. 40 from a parking lot just west of U.S. 231 in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. Donna M. McCleary, 62, West Terre Haute, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata.

Kavanaugh told Deputy Ducker that as he was attempting his left turn onto U.S. 40, McCleary ran through a yellow light at a high rate of speed before hitting his trailer.

McCleary told Ducker the light was green as she passed through and that Kavanaugh pulled out in front of her and she could not avoid the collision.

Kavanaugh’s trailer sustained damage near the driver’s side rear axle. The front bumper of McCleary’s car was damaged.

Ducker estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 10:11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, Benjamin R. Smith, 38, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 36 near County Road 600 West in a 2017 Ford Fusion. Susan E. Jeffery, 49, Indianapolis, was also westbound in a 2015 BMW 328.

Smith told Deputy Ducker a vehicle in front of him came to an abrupt stop and he had to stop immediately to avoid a collision. Jeffery was behind Smith and could not stop quickly enough, rear-ending Smith’s vehicle.

Ducker estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
