Cubs seek revenge for loss to Danville

There is good news and bad news for Greencastle’s volleyball team as it heads to the Danville Regional tomorrow to meet the host Warriors.

The good news is that the Tiger Cubs were the last team to win a set against Danville.

The bad news is that Greencastle’s set victory in a 3-1 defeat came on Sept. 24, and since that time the Warriors have won six straight matches by 3-0 margins.

In the matchup last month, Danville won the first set 25-21 and the second set 25-15 before Greencastle came back to take the third set 25-15.

Danville closed out the victory by winning the close final set 25-23.

Neither team started the season well, but both finished very strongly heading into tomorrow’s regional matchup.

Danville lost its first four matches before winning its next 10 straight. The Warriors lost two of their next three matches, won five more in a row and then lost to Plainfield on Sept. 15.

Since then, Danvile has gone 10-0 to reach the 25-win plateau.

Greencastle started its season at 3-3, and gradually increased its record to 6-4. The Tiger Cubs then won four straight matches, including two in the Putnam County tournament to win their sixth straight title.

Following a loss to Northview, the Cubs won four more in a row before losing to Danville. Since then, the Cubs have also gone 10-0 to enter the regional at 24-6.

Greencastle is led statistically in hitting by junior Allison Stevens with 307 kills, sophomore Lilly Meyer with 212 kills and senior Jada Amis with 198 kills.

In serving, freshman Anna Zellers leads with 41 aces while Stevens has 38, seniors Ivy Wright and Jalyn Duff each have 33 and Meyer has 31.

Stevens paces the frontline defense withy 65 blocks, while Amis has 36 blocks and junior Macy Clark has 29.

Senior Mackenzie Woodall has made 322 digs to lead in that category, while Meyer has 283, Duff has 263 and Wright has 201.

Duff has 614 assists, while Zellers adds 186.

Cross country

Greencastle’s Emma Wilson, Cloverdale’s Lily Monnett and South Putnam’s Austin Rumley will compete in the Shelbyville Semistate on Saturday at the Blue River course.

Wilson won the Ben Davis Regional last week with a time of 17:49.86.

The qualifiers from Ben Davis are being joined by those advancing from the Noblesville, Rushville and Shelbyville regionals.

Carmel’s Phoebe Bates, expected to be one of Wilson’s top competitors on Saturday, won the Noblesville Sectional on Oct. 6 with a time of 18:18.85 but did not compete in last week’s Noblesville Regional. Only one of Carmel’s top five sectional finishers competed at the regional.
