Brazil teen dies in Friday crash

BRAZIL — Authorities believe speed and weather conditions possibly caused an accident that killed a Brazil teen Friday.

Around 8 p.m. Friday evening a caller notified Clay County 911 Dispatch of a single-vehicle accident on County Road 300 West. The undisclosed caller said the vehicle had flipped over and the driver was ejected.

As deputies and rescue personnel arrived, they located 18-year old Tyler Layne trapped under his SUV. Attempts were made to rescue Layne by members of Posey Volunteer Fire Department, but the efforts were unsuccessful and he died of his injuries at the scene.

A preliminary investigation at the scene indicates Layne was traveling south at a high rate of speed and was unable to navigate the slight curve and wet pavement, which caused his vehicle to leave the road. Once off the road the SUV eventually flipped over coming to rest on its top.

The son of Karrie Kunkler of Greencastle and Thomas Layne of Brazil, Tyler was a senior at Northview High School.

The Clay County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene along with STAR Ambulance.
