Charles 'Sonny' Wood

Charles "Sonny" Wood, 76, of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018.

Born Aug. 11, 1942 in Putnam County, he was the son of James E. "Bud" and Imogene (Goddard) Wood.

He was a member of the Class of 1960 at Greencastle High School and graduated from Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1973 at Indiana University.

Sonny worked for the Greencastle Fire Department in 1968 and went to the Greencastle Police Department in 1971.

Sonny went on to retire from the Greencastle Police Department in 1997, where he served as captain, chief of police (twice) and detective. He had previously worked at the Stop-n-Shop, Kroger, drove a school bus and mail truck for Sodel.

Sonny enjoyed working for the police department, serving his community. He liked to go to auctions, loved old cars and spending time with family and friends.

He was a member of Brick Chapel United Methodist Church; Masonic Lodge, Greencastle; Scottish Rite, Terre Haute; and Fraternal Order of Police.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Phillips) Wood, whom he married on Nov. 5, 1961; his son, Randy (wife Lisa) Wood; grandson, Dustin (wife Chelley) Wood; an uncle, niece, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jerry and Larry Wood, and sister Phyllis Wood.

Funeral and Masonic services will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 5 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
