Tippin, a long-time Roachdale resident, has spent the last two years researching this Putnam County mystery, the story of Pearl Bryan, a young Greencastle woman slain tragically in 1896.

On Jan. 27, 1896, the 23-year-old Pearl Bryan boarded a train bound for Cincinnati. It appears Pearl was intent on convincing the father of her unborn child to do the honorable thing. Instead, he and an accomplice betrayed and tragically killed her, in what many newspaper accounts described as the crime of the century. Through numerous retellings of these events, most of which have been highly sensational and only marginally accurate, this story has taken a life of its own, becoming one of folk legend. Now you can own your own copy this tragic story in the newly published, "The Betrayal of Pearl Bryan."

Tippin's study of the Pearl Bryan case has been taken exclusively from thousands of pages of trial transcripts, depositions, contemporary newspaper accounts and other primary source documents. Those who are familiar with this story should be pleased to finally get an accurate description of the events. Others should find the account of her short life and tragic death quite fascinating.

The author and his assistant, Toni Ford, were able to travel to Campbell County, Ky., to capture digital images of the original trial transcripts and depositions. Those images, along with author summaries and additional images of related historical documents (census, birth and death records, etc.), will be available for purchase separately in CD form.

The cost of the book (including tax) is $24.08, while the CD is $10.65.

The event will be held the same evening of the annual Roachdale Fire Department Bean Supper.

The author is offering to "round up" any purchase on this evening -- with the difference to be donated to the Roachdale Fire Department. (For example, if you purchase the book and round up to $25, the difference of 92 cents will be donated to the fire department).
