Hunger and Homeless Week

Monday, November 12, 2018
Designating Nov. 10-16 National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Greencastle Mayor Bill Dory (seated, center) signs a proclamation to that effect recently at City Hall as he is joined by Michelle Boller (seated, left), Beyond Homeless executive director; and Katrina Kelsheimer (seated, right) Beyond Homeless board president; and (back, from left) Katie Kean, shift supervisor; Doug Cox, program coordinator; and Alan Zerkel, board vice president. Boller notes that one year ago, Beyond Homeless reported that since opening in March 2014 it had provided shelter for 239 women (now 308 as of Oct. 31, 2018), 116 children (137 as of Oct. 31, 2018) and 13,330 bed nights (17,712 as of Oct. 31, 2018). The proclamation notes that 13.5 percent of Putnam County residents live in poverty and 80 students in Greencastle Community Schools were identified as homeless at the start of the school year.
