Banner Graphic: How important are sports to you, and what have you learned from them?

Logan Abner: “They get you away from bad things, and keep you occupied on good things. They help you to stay out of trouble, get better grades and it’s just fun. It was great to be with my teammates in football. I definitely became a better leader my senior year. I got on the younger kids when I needed to, but that’s what leaders do.”

BG: This year in football was kind of deceiving, since you lost so many close games. Talk about your senior season.

LA: “We had so many close games, against teams who were really good. Greencastle was a great team this year and lost only two games, and we were with them the whole game. Cascade is another good team who we played right with the whole way. We had some bad games, like Edgewood, too.”

BG: Even though it’s only been a few weeks, how much do you miss it?

LA: “I miss it a lot. It sucks. I wish I was practicing after school today and playing this week.”

BG: Have you played any other sports:

LA: “I played basketball as a sophomore. I wasn’t very good. I was mostly a rebounder. It was fun to get to play with my friends. I did wrestling in fourth grade, but that was it except for football.”

BG: What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in sports?

LA: “We were playing Owen Valley this year, and I got an interception. I was running for a ‘pick six’ and I fell down at the 5-yard-line because I was running too fast. Nobody tackled me or tripped me. I just fell. I told everyone the white line tackled me. That happened in youth football once too.”

BG: What else do you do at school besides things involving sports?

LA: “I go to games and cheer on our other sports like volleyball, basketball and baseball. I really like doing that.”

BG: What do you like to do outside of school and sports?

LA: “I like to hang out with my friends and play games every now and then. I really like ‘Fortnite’. It’s a pretty good game. You’re in a lobby with 100 other people and you’re trying to be the last one standing. Everybody plays it. I wasn’t always a big game person until this came out.”

BG: What are your favorites in movies, TV and music?

LA: “I like the TV series ‘Stranger Things’ on Netflix, and I like all the Will Ferrell movies like ‘Stepbrothers’. Those are hilarious. I like both rap and country music. My favorite country artist right now is Luke Combs.”

BG: Did you guys have a go-to song to get fired up for football games?

LA: “We really liked the song ‘Mo Bomba’ that’s pretty popular right now. We played that before games. We also like ‘Country Roads Take Me Home’. We would play it three times and everybody would yell the words.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

LA: “Travel the world and get out of the United States. I would like to go to Jamaica. I have heard really good things about it. I’ve heard how beautiful it is and I’d like to enjoy the nice weather there.”

BG: What is your biggest fear?

LA: “I am afraid of heights. There are some things I’m with, but sometimes I’ll start shaking it and it gets weird. I’ve never flown in a plane, but I would if the opportunity came up.”

BG: What are your favorite and least favorite foods?

LA: “My favorite food is wings from BW3. I go there once or twice a week. I like Asian Zing and half garlic parmesan with ranch. I love chicken. My least favorite food is Chinese food. I’m not a big fan of vegetables. There are only a few that I like.”

BG: Do you have any pets?

LA: “No. I used to have a pug, but we don’t have any pets right now.”

BG: If your house was on fire, and all living things were already out, what is one thing you would go back and get?

LA: “My phone, but if I had that with me I would go back to get my book stand that has my football awards in it. That’s something to help bring back memories.”

BG: If you were to describe your personality in one word, what would that word be and why?

LA: “Funny. I like joking around all the time and having fun. I’m told I’m a funny person and I make people laugh.”

BG: What has been your favorite place to visit?

LA: “Tennessee. I love the mountain views there. If I could live in Tennessee, I would.”

BG: How important is support from your family and classmates to your success?

LA: “My girlfriend just moved here, and I have a lot of close friends who are there for me.”

BG: Describe your overall school experience, both academically and athletically.

LA: “I really like it here, and I’m glad I went to a small school. There hasn’t been any big bullying problems going on here, and I’m glad we don’t have that here. Everybody knows everyone here and is very supportive.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school, and what career are you headed toward?

LA: “I want to go to college and play football, but I’m not sure where yet. If that doesn’t work, I will go to college and study business. I’d like to own my own business someday. I’m just excited to see where my life goes after high school.”

BG: Is it difficult to keep up with your school work being an athlete?

LA: “My grades have been the best this year that they’ve ever been. I got A-B honor roll during the first grading period. Football made me do better in school. You want to show a good example for the kids younger than you.”

BG: Which particular classes and teachers have helped you the most in high school?

LA: “Mr. [Greg] Thomas, our strength and conditioning coach, has made me a lot stronger and gotten me to work hard. Mr. [Doug] Wokoun is the freshman English teacher, so I haven’t had him for a while but we still talk all the time about sports and all kinds of things. He does the radio show on Saturday mornings, and I listen to that every week.”

BG: Do you think high school has gone fast, and are you going to miss it?

LA: “I know I’m going to miss it here, but you have to grow up sometime. The whole high school time has gone really fast, but my senior year has gone especially faster — especially football. I’m going to miss this place, but I’m going to come back and watch games to support the younger kids. We still have good sports and good athletes coming up.”
