Did you know that you can use cover crops on your garden? Or that you should prune spring flowering plants once they finish flowering? Those are two examples of topics that were discussed during the Purdue Master Gardener course recently held in Putnam County.

This fall 14 individuals participated in the Purdue Master Gardener course by spending their Monday evenings learning about plant science, backyard fruits, house plants, insects and pollinators, weeds, soil health, plant diseases, herbaceous ornamentals, woody ornamentals, vegetable production, herb production, nuisance wildlife, and lawn care.

During the course, participants interacted with Putnam County Master Gardeners and Extension Educators. They also took a tour of the Olin Greenhouse & Arboretum where they heard from Susan Hickman with DePauw University.

As part of the Purdue Master Gardener course, participants took a pre/post test to see how their knowledge changed by participating in the course. All of the participants scored high enough to become Purdue Master Gardener interns. As interns, they can join the Putnam County Master Gardener Association and start doing volunteer activities around Indiana. Once they complete 35 volunteer hours, they will become Purdue Master Gardeners.

Please join us in congratulating Erin Braun, Joe Braun, John Craney, Christy Demoret, Julia Dozier, Tammy Farrar, Alan Golichowski, Anita Johnson, Pat Johnson, Bonnie Love, Connie Macy, Becky Samsel, Lynn Smith and Rendela Wenzel on completing the Purdue Master Gardener course and becoming Purdue Master Gardener interns.
