DePauw chapter of AAUP launches newsletter

Tuesday, November 20, 2018

The newly reconstituted campus chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has released the inaugural issue of its newsletter Eye of the Tiger.

The official publication of the DePauw University chapter of AAUP, Eye of the Tiger aims to keep the campus community informed of AAUP activities across campus and around the country.

The first issue features news, analysis and commentary on recent developments at DePauw, including changes to employee health benefits, increased reliance on part-time and contingent faculty, the university’s “Gold Commitment,” and the dedication of the Bottoms Alumni and Development Center.

Eye of the Tiger also includes news from AAUP chapters across the country, such as recent victories for ensuring shared faculty governance at Maricopa Community College and, closer to home, Purdue Global’s reversal of its controversial decision requiring faculty to sign nondisclosure agreements.

Designed to promote and facilitate constructive dialogue around relevant issues affecting teaching and learning at DePauw, Eye of the Tiger will solicit reader input through two forthcoming features. The first, “Speakers Corner,” publishes letters to the editor. The second, “The Doctor Is In,” invites faculty prescriptions for reclaiming DePauw’s institutional values, identity and mission.

Founded in 1915, the American Association of University Professors has helped establish and maintain rigorous standards for higher education and promotes the values of shared faculty governance, academic integrity, and academic freedom.

According to the Academic Handbook, DePauw “strongly affirms the principles of academic freedom and tenure” as set out by the AAUP.
