DePauw women lose twice at R-H

TERRE HAUTE — DePauw led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but shot just 23 percent in the second half as host Rose-Hulman defeated the Tigers, 49-47, in the third-place game of the Midwest Challenge. The Tigers, ranked ninth in the latest coaches’ poll and 13th in the D3hoops.com preseason rankings, dropped to 3-2. Rose-Hulman improved to 2-3.

DePauw scored the game’s first five points and held a 13-8 lead after the first period. The Tigers still possessed a five-point advantage at 18-13 before rattling off nine straight capped by Sydney Kopp’s 3-pointer that made it 27-13 with 6:37 left in the period. The Engineers closed the half on a 10-3 run to trim the Tigers’ halftime lead to 30-23.

Rose-Hulman held DePauw scoreless over the first four minutes of the second half and took its first lead of the game on Ally Bromenschenkel’s layup that wrapped up an 8-0 stretch and made it 31-30.

The Tigers regrouped by scoring the next six as Hayley Cange started with a bucket and Maya Howard added a pair of baskets to give DePauw a 36-31 lead. DePauw maintained the lead and headed to the fourth with a 38-37 advantage.

Howard’s 3-pointer on the opening possession of the fourth extended the lead to 41-37. The lead was still four at 43-39, but the Engineers scored the next eight on three Ally Bromenschenkel layups and another by Abby Bromenschenkel. DePauw missed shots on the first two possessions of the run and turned the ball over on the next two.

Mya Shannon’s offensive rebound and layup at 3:12 stopped the run, but Debie Gedeon’s rebound of her own miss and layup pushed the Engineers’ lead to 49-45 with 28 seconds remaining.

Following a timeout, Shannon scored a layup and drew a foul. She missed the free throw, but Cange snagged the rebound and got the ball to Kopp who missed a 3-pointer. The Tigers were awarded the ball out of bounds. Following another timeout, Howard miss a 3-pointer, Claire Keefe grabbed the rebound and Cange missed a follow-up shot as time expired.

Howard paced the Tigers with 14 points and six assists followed by Cange with 10 and a team-high five rebounds. Kopp recorded three steals.

Ally Bromenschenkel led Rose-Hulman with 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

DePauw shot 35.3 percent from the field to Rose-Hulman’s 40.7 percent and the Tigers knocked in 5 of 20 from beyond the arc to the Engineers’ 0 of 12.

The Tigers committed 17 turnovers to Rose-Hulman’s 14 and the Engineers outrebounded DePauw, 35-31, for a 20-13 edge in second-chance points.

DePauw opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Kenyon.

• Illinois Wesleyan 80, DePauw 60 — In the first round of the tourney on Saturday, Illinois Wesleyan shot 68.6 percent from the field in the opening quarter and got out to a 30-12 first-quarter lead.

The Tigers, ranked ninth in the latest coaches’ poll and 13th in the D3hoops.com preseason rankings, dropped to 3-1, while the Titans (11th coaches’/12th d3hoops) improved to 3-2.

Illinois Wesleyan hit 4 of 6 from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes and led by as many as 22 in the opening half before taking a 46-27 advantage into the intermission. The Titans’ press helped led to 11 DePauw turnovers in the first half of which Illinois Wesleyan converted into 12 points.

Sydney Kopp paced DePauw with 20 points, while Claire Keefe grabbed six rebounds in the loss and Maya Howard dished out five assists. Imani Graham led with three steals.

Nina Anderson, Maddie Merritt and Riley Brovelli each scored 14 in the win for the Titans with Kendall Sosa adding 12 and Sydney Shanks 10. Brovelli grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double and Shanks handed out five assists and recorded four steals.

DePauw shot 33.3 percent from the field and from 3-point range, while Illinois Wesleyan connected on 50.8 percent from the floor and hit 34.8 percent from 3-point range.

The Titans also held a 41-37 edge on the boards and committed 15 turnovers to the Tigers’ 15.
